Conditions still don’t seem right for a Michelin return to F1

The FIA is currently seeking tenders for tyre supply to the Formula One World Championship between 2020 and 2023. As expected, talk in motorsport circles has returned to the possibility of Michelin throwing its hat into the ring. The French tyre maker is open to the prospect of acting as sole tyre supplier, as requested by the FIA tender, provided that “a technical challenge was involved.” Yet other FIA conditions continue to place stumbling blocks in the way of a Michelin return.

Yokohama Rubber reports on joint rubber research

The results of joint research projects undertaken between Yokohama Rubber and two universities in Thailand since 2013 were announced at The International Polymer Conference of Thailand 2018 (PCT-8) in June. The joint research projects were conducted with researchers at Mahidol University and Prince of Songkla University and focused upon ensuring stable, reliable supplies of natural rubber.

F3 Asian Championship Premieres in Malaysia on Giti tyres

The opening round of the new Formula 3 Asian Championship took place on the weekend of 14-15 July, and all vehicles lined up on the grid at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit were shot with GitiCompete GTR1 tyres. Giti Tire is on board as exclusive tyre supplier to the series.

Success & happiness – a glimpse at the 2019 Pirelli Calendar

Pirelli enjoys drip-feeding information about its Calendar. This week it released a teaser in which we learn that the images gracing the 2019 Pirelli Calendar reflect the “nature of dreams and ambitions in the 21st century.” We’re not certain what that means, but no matter. Pirelli tells us that via the photos, we “enter the lives of four women – and their partners – on an intimate journey exploring the path to achieving their dreams and ambitions – and how it has left them feeling.” These four stories are perhaps best told in Pirelli’s own words:

Pirelli closes 525 million euro schuldschein financing

Yesterday, Pirelli & C. closed a ‘Schuldschein’ financing – guaranteed by Pirelli Tyre – for a total of 525 million euros. The financing, granted by primary market participants, consists of one 82-million-euro tranche with a three-year maturity, one of 423 million euros with a five-year maturity and one of 20 million euro with a seven-year maturity.

Bosch selling Beissbarth, Sicam businesses

German equity investment company Stargate Capital GmbH has entered into an agreement to purchase the Beissbarth GmbH and Sicam Srl subsidiaries from Robert Bosch GmbH. The purchase price has not been disclosed, and the deal’s finalisation is subject to approval from antitrust authorities.

ChemChina names Sinochem boss as new chairman

Ren Jianxin has retired as chairman of ChemChina. His successor has been named as Ning Gaoning (Frank Ning), who concurrently serves as chairman of Chinese state-owned petrochemical and fertiliser company Sinochem. Ren’s replacement by the chairman of ChemChina’s rival is considered by many a precursor to a merger between the two firms, an arrangement that would create a group with annual turnover in excess of £100 billion.

Linglong Tire progressing with recycling, pyrolysis projects

Linglong Tire is examining tyre pyrolysis technology and its application to waste tyre recycling. The tyre maker shares that it organised a conference on the subject at its headquarters in Zhaoyuan, China on 24 July, an event attended by 13 academics and experts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sichuan University, Zhejiang University and Beijing University of Technology.

Supervisory Board approves Continental realignment

Major organisational changes proposed by Continental AG have gained the blessing of the company’s Supervisory Board. At a meeting today, board members approved the creation of a new Continental AG holding structure, ‘Continental Group’, and also gave the green light to making an independent legal entity out of the company’s Powertrain division ahead of its partial initial public offering (IPO) in mid-2019.

Dunlop confirms tyre options for BTCC Diamond Jubilee

Dunlop has confirmed the Sport Maxx tyres to be used at this weekend’s round six of the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, which celebrates its 60th anniversary with a special Diamond Jubilee 60-mile race.

Continental acquires site adjacent to Romania tyre plant

With the purchase of 32 hectares of land in the Romanian city of Timişoara, Continental aims to expand its storage capacity and optimise the overall cost of its logistics. The land was purchased from the UMT and Prompt groups for an undisclosed sum and is located close to the Continental tyre factory within the city.

Minor fire at Continental tyre plant

A fire broke out within the Continental factory in Hannover-Stöcken, Germany yesterday. In a news alert, the city of Hannover shares that the fire began in a rubber powder grinding plant. The incident was attended by 52 firefighters and 19 fire engines, and together with the factory’s own firefighting team they were able to extinguish the fire quickly. No injuries were reported, and according to the news alert, Continental’s safety concept “functioned smoothly” during the incident.

Isoprene sourced from biomass – Yokohama Rubber announces new technology

Five years of joint research has led to a breakthrough in the production of synthetic rubber. Yokohama Rubber says it has developed the world’s first technology for efficiently producing isoprene from a biomass, and by doing so reduces dependence on petroleum.

It’s a tyre, it’s a speaker…Pirelli joins forces with iXOOST

We don’t know how we’ve lived this long without one: iXOOST has launched a Bluetooth speaker that resembles a Pirelli Formula 1 tyre. The tyre/speaker is the result of a partnership between the tyre maker and high-end car audio specialist iXOOST to “create a new sound experience inspired by motorsport.”

Europe, North America launch for Michelin Pilot aviation tyre

Michelin has introduced a new cross-ply aviation tyre for propeller-driven aircraft. Called the Michelin Pilot, the tyre is currently available in Europe, the United States and Canada in two sizes, 15×6.00-6 6/160 and 5.00-5 6/160. Three additional sizes will be available later in 2018, with the sixth size targeted for 2019.
