Wheelworld GmbH has a new owner. As of 15 May, Thomas Mögelin is the alloy rim specialist’s new managing director, having acquired the firm from founders Rolf and Sabine Bene.

USA: Tyre makers’ association voices support for ‘Tire Caucus’
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) says it “applauds” the recent formation of the bipartisan Congressional Tire Caucus, co-chaired by Joe Wilson and Jim Cooper, members of the House of Representatives from South Carolina and Tennessee, two states with significant tyre manufacturing footprints.
Titan International looking at potential ITM listing
In February, Titan International disclosed it was “evaluating its strategic alternatives” regarding its Italtractor ITM S.p.A. (ITM) steel track and undercarriage business. It engaged Shore Capital as its financial advisor in carrying out this evaluation. Paul Reitz, the company’s president and chief executive officer, reports that Titan is making “positive progress” with respect to one potential alternative, a public listing within Europe.
STARCO’s UK wheel solution hits Las Vegas
By taking advantage of synergies arising from its acquisition by Kenda in 2017, STARCO has introduced its UK-made Flex lite wheel solution to the US market. Kenda USA subsidiary Martin Wheel presented this European market top-seller at a trade show in Las Vegas last week. STARCO shares that interest in the 10- to 15-inch solutions amongst end-users was strong, and it looks forward to receiving feedback about Flex lite from US-based manufacturers and distributors.
SRI collaborating on IoT TPMS solution
Mobility as a service concepts are expected to entice many motorists from car ownership to vehicle sharing, and Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) is preparing for this future with a new partnership with Japanese automotive Internet of things (IoT) service company TripodWorks and Taiwan-based TPMS manufacturer Sysgration.
TYRES: Nokian Tyres chancing stock exchange symbol
From the start of trading on Monday 20 May 2019, the stock symbol used to represent Nokian Tyres plc on the Nasdaq Helsinki stock exchange will change from NRE1V to TYRES. The tyre maker’s ISIN is FI0009005318.
Kumho Tire names new boss for Germany
Effective 1 May, Woongchul Shin has taken on the role of general manager at Kumho Tire Europe, and as such is responsible for Kumho’s business in the German market. He succeeds Namwook Jung, who has relocated to Milan to head the Kumho Tyre Italia operation.
Hankook: Companies renamed to establish unified brand
In the coming weeks and months, we’ll see name changes applied to companies within the Hankook Tire Group. Hankook Tire Worldwide, holding company for the South Korean firm, has been renamed Hankook Technology Group, while a number of subsidiaries have been rebranded to emphasise the core Hankook brand. Core affiliate Hankook Tire changes its name to Hankook Tire & Technology.

Pirelli plant to close as part of Brazil investment
Pirelli is investing in production modernisation in Brazil, and as was recently the case at Goodyear in Germany, there are winners and losers. The latter includes the workforce at the company’s motorcycle tyre plant in Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul, which is expected to close sometime in the next couple of years.
Continental: High retread demand driving 300% production boost at USA plant
Almost 60 ContiLifeCycle partners around the world, including 30 in the USA and Canada, currently retread tyres using ContiTread treads. Demand for these pre-cure treads is growing in North America. For this reason, Continental is raising production this year at its February 2018-inaugurated tread plant in Mount Vernon, USA by 300 per cent compared to 2018 levels. A second shift was added in March to facilitate this.
STARCO dual wheels now an option for Valtra tractors
Around 30 years ago, tractor manufacturer Valtra implemented a radical strategic change that resulted in the production of machinery that is amongst the most customisable in the world. Pretty much every Valtra tractor is unique, and a third of the approximately 9,000 Valtra tractors manufactured last year went through a customising studio called Unlimited. Now, for the first time, buyers can select STARCO dual wheels on their new tractor as part of this customisation process.
Continental bosses lay foundation stone for new HQ
The foundation stone for Continental’s new headquarters in Hannover, Germany is now in place, and the company says its construction project is on schedule. Chief executive officer Dr Elmar Degenhart and Executive Board members Dr Ariane Reinhart and Wolfgang Schäfer hosted a ceremony to mark the occasion at the construction site last Wednesday.
Asahi Kasei – 2020 move to new Europe HQ
Synthetic rubber and chemicals company Asahi Kasei is relocating its European headquarters. Asahi Kasei Europe (AKEU) will remain in Düsseldorf, Germany, however in the second half of 2020 will move to a location in Düsseldorf harbour. In this new location, the company intends to consolidate its sales, marketing and R&D activities, thereby further enhancing its business approach to the European automotive industry.
Luca Mai joins Triangle Tyre as OTR director for Europe
As of 1 May, Triangle Tyre has strengthened its team within our region with the appointment of Luca Mai as OTR director, Europe. Mai joins Triangle Tyre from Marangoni, where he worked for 18 years, most recently as sales director for TBR and OTR tyres.
