Production of truck tyres for the European market has commenced at the Apollo Tyres plant in Gyöngyöshalász, Hungary. A familiar face has returned to Goodyear Tire & Rubber. As of 20 September, Darren R. Wells is back with the tyre maker as executive vice-president and chief financial officer – a position he held between 2008 and 2013. He succeeds Laura Thompson, who in June announced her intention to retire in the first quarter of 2019 following a 35-year career with the company.
Next month, Prinx Chengshan will become the first Chinese tyre maker to be publicly listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Michael Chu, deputy general manager of the company’s international sales centre, told Tyrepress.com that the listing is expected to take place on 9 October. This move has been more than a year in the planning.
During a meeting with European dealers, Prinx Chengshan’s Michael Chu shared details of the company’s plans to set up a new manufacturing facility outside of China. Prinx Chengshan is currently in negotiations with authorities in Malaysia and aims to establish both PCR and TBR production there.

Gwendal Poullennec has succeeded Michael Ellis as international director of the Michelin Guides. He began in this role yesterday and will manage the 32 editions of the Michelin guide and lead the global team of Michelin inspectors, reporting directly to Pascal Couasnon, director of gastronomic and tourist activities in the Michelin Group.
Yet another sports sponsorship for BKT – following on from the start of its Serie B and Coupe de la Ligue title sponsorships in Italy and France, the off-highway tyre specialist has entered into a partnership with the KFC Big Bash League (BBL) cricket league in Australia. BKT has signed an agreement with governing body Cricket Australia that secures its status as off-highway tyre supplier to the Twenty20 cricket league for three years.
During the summer months of June to August, the SnapSkan tyre scanning technology from Nokian Tyres measured the condition of tyres fitted to almost 200,000 cars in Finland’s largest cities. What these free tests showed is that up 13 per cent of all cars scanned were fitted with summer tyres that have what the tyre maker calls a “dangerously low tyre tread depth.”

It isn’t just Pirelli tyres that have gained original equipment approval for the new BMW X4 – Yokohama Rubber will also supply its Advan Sport V105 to the all-new model. Two sizes of Yokohama Advan tyres are available as a factory fitment on the BMW X4, 225/60R18 104W and the run-flat 245/50R19 105W fitment.
Following long-term testing with Vredestein Quatrac 5 and Comtrac 2 all-season tyres, Medi 4 Ambulance Services Ltd. has selected Apollo Vredestein as its tyre supplier of choice. Announcing its new role, Apollo Vredestein comments that its tyres easily proved to be the “perfect choice” for the pre-hospital patient care and transport solutions provider’s fleet, for which “safety and the ability to perform adequately in all weathers is paramount.”
Whereas most publications and organisations typically include no more than ten contenders in their tyre tests, Germany’s Auto Bild prefers to line up dozens of products and then eliminate all but the most promising in a knockout round. The latest Auto Bild winter tyre test is no exception – no less than 51 tyres were subject to wet and snow braking tests to determine which would stay in the running to be evaluated in greater detail. The results of this initial round have now been published.
