A new agreement has expanded Bridgestone Corporation’s involvement in international sport. The tyre maker and rubber manufacturer has become a Worldwide Paralympic Partner; it is the seventh entity to associate itself with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in this capacity.
The Vredestein Traxion Optimall tyre range has grown to a total of ten fitments with the addition of seven further sizes. The first of these new sizes will be introduced at the EIMA agricultural show in Bologna next week.
A new Continental drive axle tyre developed specifically for fitment on coaches aims to provide passengers with enhanced safety during the winter months. The tyre maker claims its HDW2 Coach “outperforms M+S tyres and exceeds the performance requirements of the 3PMSF certification.”
Changes are afoot within Giti Tire’s European sales and marketing team. Torsten Gehrmann, senior managing director Europe, has assumed leadership of sales and marketing for the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) region as well as for Italy and Spain. Stefan Klein, who previously headed sales and marketing in DACH, will part ways with Giti Tire on 31 December 2018, a little over a year after he joined the company.
DS Automobiles has entered into an original equipment tyre supply arrangement with Goodyear. The tyre maker will ship its Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV in size 235/45R20 100V XL to the Groupe PSA brand for fitment on the DS7 Crossback.
The subject of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) was also broached at the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association’s (ETRMA) Board of Directors meeting. The Board stressed the importance of political debate – both on this issue and about the wider topic of sustainable mobility – adopting a strong scientific approach, based on facts and solid knowledge. Franco Annunziato, president of the ETRMA, called attention to the “value of having law-making, guided by robust science and based on evidences, as the only way to achieve the legislators’ targets.”
At the Board of Directors meeting held at its headquarters in Brussels yesterday, the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association welcomed Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) as its newest member. SRI, whose affiliate subsidiary Falken Tyre Europe will be the association’s direct point of contact, will be counted as a member as of January 2019.
Linglong Tire confirms the signing of a US$300 million deal with Paraguay-based tyre distributor Sunset Tires. Wang Feng, chairman of Linglong Tire, put his signature on a strategic cooperation agreement along with Nabil Chamseddine, chief executive officer and president of Sunset, on 12 October.
Production of precipitated silica has commenced at the Evonik Industries plant in South Carolina, USA. The facility, set up with an investment of around US$120 million, will primarily meet demand from tyre manufacturers in North America for Evonik’s Ultrasil products. More than 40 new jobs have been created by the project.
Michelin has produced a second video covering its engagement as MotoGP tyre supplier. The English-subtitled video follows on from the short film released at the end of the 2016 season, Michelin’s first as exclusive supplier following an eight-year hiatus, and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the French tyre firm’s latest achievements in the sport.
As of November, Bridgestone will make its proprietary DriveGuard RFT (run-flat technology) available on its main product lines for the aftermarket. Specifically, the Turanza, Blizzak and Weather Control tyre ranges will gain DriveGuard fitments.
The vast majority of Sailun Jinyu Group shareholders have approved the adoption of a new company name and changes to the company’s articles of association. Votes held during an extraordinary meeting of shareholders on 12 October resulted in a 99.1 per cent turnout in favour of both measures. The tyre maker will thus adopt the name Sailun Group Co., Ltd.
Pirelli is looking forward to tax concessions worth millions through its participation in the ‘Patent Box’ tax regime. Yesterday the tyre maker signed an agreement with the Italian tax office covering the 2015 to 2019 fiscal years; it estimates that the tax benefit for the three fiscal years to 2017 alone will amount to approximately 54 million euros.
Ten winter SUV tyres – from premium brands to a so-called “budget tyre from the Far East” – were put to the test in this year’s comparative evaluation from Auto Bild Allrad. The German 4×4/SUV publication examined size 235/60 R18 107H/V products, fitting the tyres to an Audi Q5 for testing in wet, dry and snow disciplines. Happily, the testers found no truly dreadful tyres within the candidates’ ranks.
Hankook Tire’s recently-released electric vehicle tyre has already snapped up its first award. At last month’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), the Hankook Kinergy AS EV was honoured in the automotive and transportation category. This is the first time Hankook Tire has received an IDEA award for a production model, having previously only gained this distinction with concept tyres, such as its ‘climate change’ concepts in 2015 and its ‘Birth On Nature’ (BON) tyre two years later.
