According to a new report undertaken by Eunomia Research and Consulting for Friends of the Earth, up to 19,000 tonnes of microplastic pollution could be entering UK waterways every year from vehicle tyres. The report, titled Reducing Household Contributions to Marine Plastic Pollution, listed tyres in its ‘top ten’ list of items of concern, commenting that interventions and innovation, as well as governmental, business and scientific collaboration, may be required over the coming five years to solve the issue.
The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has informed Titan International of its wish to relinquish its shareholding in agricultural and industrial tyre manufacturer Voltyre-Prom. The Kremlin-backed sovereign wealth fund, which acquired the tyre maker together with Titan and private equity firm One Equity Partner in 2013, shared its intention via its exercise on 14 November of the settlement put option included within the Voltyre-Prom Shareholders’ Agreement.

Construction and property maintenance specialist Princebuild is rolling out Michelin’s CrossClimate+ and Agilis CrossClimate tyres across its entire fleet of 180 cars and vans. The move will ensure its vehicles benefit from traction all year round; the Peterborough-based company made the decision to switch after a meeting with Michelin showed the statistics and improved safety its CrossClimate range of tyres could offer.
Although UK commercial vehicle registrations for the year through to the end of October are still lower than for the same period of last year, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) reports a 10.9 per cent year-on-year increase for the month of October, with a total of 33,781 new registrations of commercial vehicles up to 16 tonnes. Across the European Union, a total of 221,514 commercial vehicles were newly-registered during the month, 6.9 per cent more than in October 2017.

IndiGo, the largest airline in India in terms of fleet size and passengers carried, has appointed Michelin tyre partner for its entire fleet. Michelin Aircraft Tyre will supply tyres from its Michelin Air range, primarily the Michelin Air X radial, for IndiGo’s Airbus A320 and ATR 72-600 aircraft – a current total of 189 planes.
The partnership between Kumho Tire and Tottenham Hotspur FC that began in 2016 has been extended for a further three years from the start of the 2018/19 season. From May 2019, the Michelin Europe North regional operation will find itself at home in new offices in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Its new 6,200 square metre premises is located within ‘The Squaire’, the spacecraft-shaped office building that sits above the intercity railway station at Frankfurt Airport, and can accommodate more than 300 people.
