Continental: New EcoContact 6 offers double-digit improvement in mileage, rolling resistance

With the new EcoContact 6, Continental says it has launched a summer car tyre that “delivers substantial improvements in terms of rolling resistance, mileage, steering precision and braking distances.” The tyre has already original equipment approvals from a dozen European vehicle manufacturers for subcompact to mid-range cars, and volume production of the range for the replacement market has now begun. By next March, 112 dimensions for 13- to 22-inch rim diameters will be available.

Continental adds features to ContiConnect

The first update made to the ContiConnect digital tyre monitoring platform has gone live. Continental has added further functions to the web portal and refreshed its look. The new features also link ContiConnect services directly with fleet operations, enabling digital monitoring data to be used during tyre maintenance.

Pirelli resumes cross-ply car tyre production

No, this isn’t fake news or a misprint: More than half a century after producing its last cross-ply car tyre and electing to exclusively focus upon radial construction in this segment, Pirelli is once again making cross-ply tyres for classic cars. The Pirelli Stella Bianca is back.

Hankook Tire: Lower OE volumes, costs in US drag operating profit down

Hankook Tire has announced its financial results for Q3 2018. In the three months to 30 September, the tyre maker achieved consolidated global sales of KRW 1.7557 trillion (£1.2 billion), 3.8 per cent less than in the third quarter of 2017. At KRW 184.6 billion (£126.0 million), operating profit was down 13.8 per cent.

Mighty Earth: GPSNR risks being a greenwashing scheme

The new GPSNR isn’t without its critics. Campaign organisation Mighty Earth notes that no NGOs have joined so far, and suggests that the platform is thus “already failing” from the outset to exemplify leadership within the rubber industry.

Global platform for sustainable natural rubber launched

Members of the Tire Industry Project (TIP) and other stakeholders came together on 25 October to celebrate the inauguration of a new platform for positively transforming the natural rubber supply chain. Following 12 months of stakeholder collaboration, the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) has been launched with what is described as “an ambitious and wide-reaching set of priorities” for the natural rubber chain.

Michelin honours 5 partners at Supplier Awards

Five of Michelin’s best suppliers were recognised at the fourth edition of the tyre maker’s Supplier Awards, which was held yesterday at ‘Aventure Michelin’ in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The awards were presented to representatives of the winning companies by Jean-Dominique Senard, chief executive officer and managing general partner of the Michelin Group, and four members of the Group Executive Committee.

Bain Capital buys US distributor Dealer Tire

The private equity firm building up a European tyre distribution group through its acquisition of firms such as Fintyre and Reiff has made a significant investment in North America. Bain Capital reports its acquisition of a majority shareholding in US-based aftermarket tyre and parts distributor Dealer Tire, LLC. The interests of Lindsay Goldberg LLC, Dealer Tire’s investment partner since December 2014, will be acquired by Bain Capital Private Equity. The transaction is expected to close by December.

Michelin Supplier Award an honour – VMI

Amongst the companies recognised for exceptional contribution to the Michelin Group over the past years at a ceremony held yesterday evening at the museum Aventure Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand, France was VMI. Harm Voortman, VMI Group chief executive officer, received the award from Jean-Dominique Senard, chief executive of the Michelin Group.

UK car production a factor in lower Q3 2018 volumes for Superior Industries Inc.

Declining car production in the UK has contributed towards lower wheel unit shipments in the third quarter of 2018, reports Superior Industries International, Inc. Compared with the prior-year period, Q3 2018 shipments were down 300,000 units to 4.7 million.

SMMT reports lower September car production as “market turmoil” continues

UK car manufacturing fell by -16.8 per cent in September 2018, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Compared with the same month last year, 25,610 fewer cars rolled off production lines. September’s decline caps off a turbulent first three quarters as global trade tensions, model changes and uncertainty over diesel and Brexit were exacerbated by testing backlogs due to new emissions regulations.

Goodyear’s McClellan to chair USTMA board

Stephen R. McClellan is the new chairman of the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association’s (USTMA) Board of Directors. The president of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Americas business unit began in this role on 3 October and will serve a two-year term. McClellan succeeds Jim Hawk, chairman, Toyo Holdings of America, Inc., who served as chairman of the USTMA Board since 2016.

Latin Tyre Expo combines with Auto Part Expo for 2019 show

Next year the Latin Tyre Expo will team up with Latin Auto Parts Expo, with both shows taking place with at the Amador Convention Center in Panama between 24 and 26 July 2019. Exhibition organiser Latin Expo Group says that reservations for exhibitor stands within the 35,000 square metre halls are now open.

Pirelli completes high-end tyre JV

With the completion of Pirelli’s acquisition of a 49 per cent stake in Jining Shenzhou Tyre Co., the tyre maker’s management assume operational responsibility for the joint venture company’s consumer tyre plant in China. Pirelli states that the new plant will provide it with the “necessary production flexibility” it requires within its ‘High Value’ segment to accommodate the evolving Chinese market as well as expected developments in electric vehicles and the growing share of original equipment homologations obtained in China, Japan and Korea.
