UK drivers welcome smart motorways to reduce congestion and emissions

Venson survey shows drivers support smart motorways, but some education is still required to improve safety and a sizeable minority have safety concerns. With controversial smart motorways continuing to cause debate across the motor industry and within Government, Venson Automotive Solutions has asked drivers for their opinion. Bucking the ‘anti’ trend led by industry influencers calling for alternations to the system, 56 per cent agree that smart motorways are indeed necessary to help improve road safety and ease congestion. Half see the benefits for congestion levels, and a quarter expect smart motorways to ease emissions. However, one in ten admit they don’t know what a smart motorway is, highlighting the need for driver education.

NFDA discusses transition to electric vehicles with DfT

NFDA chief executive Sue Robinson met with Rachel Maclean MP, parliamentary undersecretary of state at the Department for Transport, on 28 January to discuss the Government’s ambition to end the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030 and outline the key role dealers play on the Road to Zero.

Michelin fits the bill for G&B Finch

Essex-based aggregates business G&B Finch was established in 1969. The company is a family-run business which provides aggregate and haulage services to firms in the construction industry. It also supplies ready mixed concrete and a range of sustainable waste disposal facilities, including inert soils, non-hazardous and hazardous soils and tarmac.

The company’s 50-strong fleet of commercial vehicles runs almost entirely on Michelin, having found the tyres to deliver the best longevity and endurance of any truck tyre on the market.

VRA elects new chair and deputy chair

Philip Nothard has been elected as the new chair of the Vehicle Remarketing Association, succeeding Sam Watkins, who has held the role for the last two years. With a 30 year career in the used car sector, he is currently insight and strategy director at Cox Automotive, and has also held key positions at Cap HPI as well as other senior roles across the automotive sector.

Kordsa is lightening EV batteries with its carbon fibre fabrics

Plant closure could be “tip of iceberg” for new car supply issues – VRA

The latest temporary closure of Honda’s Swindon plant because of parts shortages could be the “tip of the iceberg” for new car supply issues in 2021, the Vehicle Remarketing Association is warning. Chair Philip Nothard said that the problem, believed to be caused by poor availability of semiconductors, was potentially a sign of things to come from all manufacturers.

88 per cent of independent garages offer vulnerable MOT customers a pick-up service

As another example of how the way we are doing business nowadays has been changed by the COVID pandemic, a survey carried out by the Independent Garage Association (IGA) has revealed that 88 per cent of independent garages are currently offering an MOT collection and delivery service for clinically extremely vulnerable and self-isolating people.

Honda pauses production at Swindon – again

Honda will next week pause car production at its factory in Swindon; the third time it has done so in a little over a month. The Japanese car manufacturer said in a statement that output would be paused from Monday to Thursday next week, the longest such pause so far. It said that global supply disruption as a result of the coronavirus pandemic was responsible for the pause.

Motor auctions will continue online during lockdown, says NAMA

Motor auctions members of the National Association of Motor Auctions (NAMA) have told their trade body that during the lockdowns announced on Monday 4 January for England and Scotland online auctions will continue despite the closure of non-essential retail.

Automated car washes can stay open during lockdown

The Car Wash Association (CWA) and Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) represent the 5,350 independent forecourt operators and specialist car wash companies across the UK. This covers 65 per cent of the total fuel outlets (PFS) with more than 50 per cent having high-quality Automated Car Washes (ACW).

UK LCV market finishes year down -20.0 per cent

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveal that UK new light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations ended 2020 down -20.0 per cent, with the van market rounding off the year in decline following three months of growth. 292,657 vehicles were registered in 2020, as the impact of Covid and uncertainty over the future relationship with the EU brought down demand toward the end of the year, with registrations in the final month of the year dropping -1.0 per cent, albeit with volumes consistent with previous Decembers.

Initial automotive industry reactions to UK Brexit deal

Just before Christmas, the UK Government and the EU announced that they had thrashed out a no-tariff trade deal. Negotiations went down to the wire, but, a mere four and a half years after the UK voting to leave the EU, agreement was approved by both sides.
