DoT data suggests car usage has surpassed pre-pandemic levels
The latest daily domestic transport usage by mode, released by the Department of Transport data, which compares current transport usage to pre-COVID-19 levels, reveals a significant trend: car usage has not only returned to, but has surpassed, pre-pandemic levels, while public transport modes, including buses, National Rail, and the London Tube, continue to fall behind.

Solving pothole crisis should be top priority for new government – Startline Used Car Tracker
Almost all motorists (96 per cent) say solving the potholes crisis should be the number one priority for the new Labour government, according to new research. August’s Startline Used Car Tracker also shows that 92 per cent would like to see fairer fuel prices, 91 per cent lower insurance costs, 85 per cent better public transport and 81 per cent more road building to ease congestion.

Ipswich Buses signs three-year deal with Michelin
Ipswich Buses has signed a new three-year contract with Michelin’s Services & Solution division, switching from “a rival tyre manufacturer” due to the longevity and performance of the Michelin product, plus the added value from its multi-life policy. The exclusive agreement will see Michelin supply, fit and manage all the tyres across Ipswich Buses’ 75-strong fleet of single- and double-deck buses, plus a small number of coaches.

Demand for new vans falls in July but 2024 market remains at three-year high
The UK’s light commercial vehicle (LCV) market dropped -8.5 per cent in July with 24,689 vans, 4x4s, pickups and taxis joining the road, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The performance is in comparison with a strong July in 2023 – the best in three years – however, which came amid a record-equalling 17 consecutive months of market growth. With that exceptional run of demand ending only in May this year, the overall market remains robust with registrations up 2.7 per cent year to date to become the best first seven months since 2019.

3,000 EV technician shortfall predicted by 2031
An analysis by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) highlights “a postcode lottery for EV skills” across the UK, the Institute says. The IMI’s latest EV TechSafe certification data shows that 58,800 technicians are now qualified to work on electric vehicles, representing 24 per cent of the UK automotive workforce. Based on the forecast increase in EVs on UK roads, the IMI is currently predicting a shortfall of 3,000 technicians by 2031. The gap is expected to reach 16,000 by 2035.

July marks two straight years of growth for UK new car market
The UK new car market rose by 2.5 per cent in July, delivering two years of consecutive growth, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). With 147,517 new cars reaching the road, it was the best performance for July since 2020, when a re-opening of dealerships following four months of lockdown saw a surge in deliveries to fulfil demand pent-up demand.
