UK independent garages have responded enthusiastically to last week’s announcement that they will be able to access Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) using the same framework as their EU counterparts, thanks to agreements reached by the Independent Garage Association (IGA). The IGA reports that garages are getting in touch in large numbers to register their interest in the scheme, which will transform the way garages and workshops access manufacturer technical information on security systems such as keys and ECU coding, by creating one central audit and certification process.
AES UK (Automotive Equipment Solutions) has introduced a hand-held tyre scanner which allows commercial vehicle operators, workshops and tyre retailers to quickly and accurately measure tyre tread depth. TreadReader HD (Heavy Duty) is a compact, easy-to-use device which provides full-width tread depth analysis and creates a detailed scan of each tyre to within 0.2mm.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and the British Motor Show have renewed their partnership for 2023 with the announcement of an all-new Tech Hub sponsored by the IMI. The IMI Tech Hub will feature a replica of a full-sized garage service bay and ICE and EV cars, with engaging workshops helping visitors learn more about the technological advances in automotive. Interactive sessions on the IMI stand will also give visitors first-hand experience of the multitude of career opportunities in the sector, with IMI experts available in both locations to provide more information on how to get started.
Andy Gratton has been promoted to managing director at Ring Automotive, the UK subsidiary of ams OSRAM. He takes over from Theresa Spencer who leaves the company at the end of August 2023, to pursue a new challenge outside the automotive aftermarket. Gratton is currently Ring’s financial director and formally assumed the MD role as of 1 July. Theresa Spencer will remain in the business until 31 August to support the hand-over process.
The new car market grew 25.8 per cent in June with 177,266 vehicles registered, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The June performance marks the 11th consecutive month of growth as the industry gradually overcomes the pandemic-induced supply chain shortages that constrained production for much of the previous two years. TerraClean-sponsored touring car ace Colin Turkington pulled off a thrilling comeback to recover from starting last in race one, to win the final race of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) weekend at Oulton Park. The four-time BTCC champion produced a legendary performance to take his 65th career victory, after a technical infraction meant Turkington had to start the first of three races on Sunday at the very back of the grid.
