Yokohama HPT: a new chapter

Recent months have seen the appointment of a completely new leadership team at Yokohama’s UK distribution operation, Yokohama HPT Ltd. Well-known in the market for its high-performance passenger car tyre and wheel sales, the appointments signal the start of a new chapter. With that in mind, Tyres & Accessories visited the company’s Milton Keynes headquarters and distribution centre in order to meet with recently-appointed CEO Peter Fairlie; commercial director, Karl Naylor; and marketing manager, Lucie Dalton, in order to find out more.

Does Apollo occupy 35% of the Indian tyre market?

At the start of 2022, several sources on social media shared a chart suggesting that Apollo Tyres is the biggest tyre manufacturer by market share. And what’s more, Michelin was nowhere to be seen. “Don’t believe every meme you see” is great advice for everyone, but for us “check your sources” is a basic rule of thumb. So, we had to take a closer look at those market share claims and found that, while there’s no smoke without fire and they do relate some truth, there is also a fair bit more to the story.

Goodyear job cuts: Unanswered questions in the UK and EMEA tyre markets

Goodyear’s decision to cut 5 per cent of its global salaried employees is shocking enough for the firm’s 72,000-strong worldwide workforce. However, the fact that senior executives directly linked that decision to the company’s worse-than-expected performance in the EMEA region (Europe Middle East and Africa) is giving employees in those countries extra cause for concern.

Goodyear to cut 5% of salaried staff globally, $80 million 4Q loss expected in EMEA

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is planning “rationalization and workforce reorganization” actions that would result in a 5 per cent reduction in salaried staff globally, or about 500 positions. According to executives, the move has been prompted by the “challenging industry environment and cost pressure driven by inflation.” However it is also attributed to weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter results:

Oakmain ‘struck off’ from GEA membership

Following the news that Wales-based garage equipment firm Oakmain Ltd’s sales manager was prosecuted for providing fraudulent solicitors letters to some garages applying to become MOT test centres, it has emerged that the historically “long-time” Garage Equipment Association (GEA) member company have been “struck off” from membership.

Solidium: Nokian Tyres Romania plans offer ‘good prospects for building the business on a new basis’

Publishing its second-half 2022 report on 25 January, Solidium Oy (Nokian Tyres’ largest single shareholder) expressed confidence in the Finnish tyremaker’s work last year.

IGA calls for Extension to MOT 4-1-1 Consultation

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has written to the Department for Transport (DfT), urgently requesting an extension to their consultation proposing changes to the MOT frequency and other MOT enhancements.

MOT fraud: Oakmain sales manager prosecuted over forged solicitors’ letters

The sales manager of Wales-based garage equipment supplier Oakmain Ltd received a suspended custodial sentence on 16 January 2023. Newport Crown Court found that Thomas Richard Woods “knowingly providing false information in the form of forged solicitors letters to secure MOT garage applications” following a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) investigation. The company reportedly also completed the MOT Station application (VT01) form, which is required to set up an MOT test station on behalf of customers. The DVSA described the case as “the first-ever prosecution for providing fraudulent solicitors letters used as part of MOT garage applications.”

Tyres behind 13% of MOT failures in 3Q 2022

New analysis of DVSA MOT test data shows that faulty tyres accounted for 13 per cent of failures between July and September 2022. Of all failures, 27 per cent are “dangerous”. Previous analyses of MOT failure data have found that tyres account for between 8 per cent and 22 of all MOT failures. And therefore the latest figures represent long-term median tyre-related failure rates. Since industry sources generally agree that MOTs generate around 20 per cent of total annual UK tyre replacement sales, however you count it, MOTs have a significant impact on tyre maintenance and therefore road safety.

Vaculug promotes Craig Rudkin to national accounts director

Craig Rudkin has been promoted to the position of national accounts director at Vaculug. Rudkin has been part of Vaculug for 31 years and has experience in many aspects of the business. According to the company, this appointment comes at a time when Vaculug is experiencing “major growth and making investments in strengthening the…team ready for another successful year.”

Beissbarth becomes part of the Stertil Group

Beissbarth Automotive Testing Solutions GmbH is taking over Beissbarth GmbH as a subsidiary of Stertil B.V., effective 1 January 2023. Most self-administration proceedings Beissbarth GmbH applied for in July 2022 are therefore complete. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Analysts: Conti ’missed’ EBIT by 15%, notwithstanding better Tires performance

Following the news that Continental AG has pre-released fourth-quarter 2020/full-year 2022 sales, adjusted pre-tax profit (EBIT) margin and free-cash-flow figures, financial analysts immediately began sharing their verdict.

Government consulting on MOT changes, again

The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a public consultation on the future of MOTs in Great Britain, which closes at 11:59pm on 28 February 2023. According to the DfT, “Views are being sought to update MOT testing for cars, motorbikes and vans to ensure roadworthiness checks continue to balance costs on motorists while ensuring road safety, keeping up with advances in vehicle technology, and tackling vehicle emissions.” But the short story is that they are once again proposing to “change the date at which the first MOT for new light vehicles is required from 3 to 4 years” under the guise of saving “motorists across Great Britain around £100 million a year in MOT fees” based on a £40 MOT.
