In recent years, authorities in many regions of China have put waste tyre recycling on their agenda. On 15 January 2018, The English Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Welsh Government published a consultation on “proposals to tackle crime and poor performance in the waste sector and introduce a new fixed penalty for the waste duty of care”. That 2018 consultation focussed on the standard of operator competence at permitted waste sites and introduced a fixed penalty notice for breaches of the household waste duty of care. Full-year 2022 financial results show that – in terms of share price performance, at least – Japanese tyre manufacturers are leading the way on the global stage. In 2020, Continental AG announced its goal of being carbon-neutral across the business by 2050. Also as of the 2020 fiscal year, Continental confirmed that it is procuring all of the electricity for its production sites around the world from renewable energy sources. Now, the German-based tyremaker is emphasising its goal of making tyres 100 per cent manufactured from sustainable materials by 2050.

Enso, which describes itself as “the world’s first sustainable tyre manufacturer”, reports that it has “successfully proven the benefits of specialist electric vehicle (EV) tyres” in trials conducted as part of the TfL FreightLab Innovation Challenge. According to the company, Enso tyres outperformed standard-fit tyres both in terms of reducing particulate matter (PM) emissions by up to 35 per cent and improving energy efficiency by up to 10 per cent in a 15-month trial.
VCS, the UK’s leading manufacturer of emergency services vehicles, is investing over £5 million in a new manufacturing facility for ambulances, police, and specialist vehicle conversions in Bradford this April. According to the company, the new factory will ensure the UK’s supply of world-class emergency vehicles by creating the country’s largest dedicated manufacturing facility and trebling VCS’s current production capacity to nearly 1500 vehicles annually. And with ambulance and police vehicles a strong source of premium fleet tyre sales, there are obvious positive implications for the tyre business.
Following the departure of Sentury’s Spain factory project’s general manager, Warren Rudman, Sentury’s senior executives have taken up the reins of Sentury Tire (Spain), according to local business publication Economia Digital Galicia.
