Richard Edy dies aged 79
Richard Edy, who was NTDA director for 25 years, died on Tuesday 13 February aged 79. He leaves behind his wife, sister, three children and eight grandchildren. Edy served as director of the association from 1989 to 2014.

R&D, TIP and Alphatread amongst Hankook’s sustainability and retreading achievements
Hankook reports that it “is committed to investing in sustainability across every aspect of a tyre’s life from sourcing sustainable raw materials to R&D focus on materials, product performance and new product developments”. When you add in the production Alphatread-branded retreaded tyres, you can see how Hankook has attained a number of sustainability achievements.

Goodyear lost $291 million in Q4 2023, but EMEA improvements
Goodyear’s fourth-quarter 2023 sales decreased 4.8 per cent compared to the previous year driven by “the impact of lower replacement volume and lower third-party chemical sales”. That and other factors resulted in a fourth-quarter 2023 net loss of $291 million compared to a net loss of $104 million – 180 per cent worse than the figure a year ago.

Michelin most prominent and best sentiment tyre brand in 2024
In 2005, Tyres & Accessories published the first in what would become a 12-year series of online brand prominence and sentiment analyses relating to the best-known tyre brands. That research was conducted in association with Envisional and latterly NetNames. Now, one of the brains behind the original data has developed “a new and improved methodology for quantifying brand prominence and sentiment”. Here, David Barnet, now brand protection strategist at intangible asset management specialists, Stobbs, presents the results of a new study looking at the online prominence and sentiment of tyre brands.

PCL showcases new demo van
PCL has invested in a brand new ‘Demo Van’. Its primary use will be to provide live demonstrations of products at customer premises. The vehicle will also enable the PCL team to demonstrate products to partners at its Sheffield-based factory, as well as further afield in the future at trade shows, open days and tyre safety events.

Show your tyres some love this Valentine’s Day – Bridgestone
The UK’s vehicles and tyres need some more TLC, according to Bridgestone, with 73 per cent of motorists not even checking their tyres. A survey of 2000 drivers conducted by Bridgestone revealed that nearly three-quarters of drivers don’t check their treads or pressures themselves, either never thinking about it, leaving it to the garage to do or asking their partners to check instead.

ATS Euromaster: Ageing fleets require more maintenance amidst political and economic
With shipping routes from Asia to Europe disrupted by Houthi rebel attacks on merchant shipping in the Red Sea, many shipping carriers are avoiding the Suez Canal and take the vastly longer route via South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Estimates put the additional fuel cost at $2 million (£1.6m) and the journey adds at least 10 days to deliveries for vehicle makers already struggling to ramp up supplies hit by restrictions due to Covid and the Russian campaign against Ukraine, where many car components are made. Both Volvo in Ghent, Belgium, and Tesla in Berlin, Germany, have halted production temporarily as a result. As a result, fleets – especially those with ageing vehicles – ought to invest more in strategic and preventative maintenance, according to ATS Euromaster.

NIRA Dynamics passes 100 million tyre pressure indicator milestone
TPMS supplier NIRA Dynamics has sold more than 100 million Tyre Pressure Indicator (TPI) units, the company announced on 7 February. More recently, the company has upgraded its users experience (UX) and added ADAS-linked Road Surface Alerts and Road Surface Conditions features.

Yokohama commits to SBTi

Tyremakers sued in US class action antitrust lawsuit – public communications and high prices at centre of case
Days after the European Commission announced that it is investigating a number of leading tyre manufacturers in relation to allegations of price-fixing, the same companies have become the subject of a similar class-action lawsuit in the USA. The class action relates to “…purchases of tyres within four years prior to the filing” – which clearly relates to a potentially enormous number of tyres. The case basically alleges that the named tyremakers colluded to raise and sustain higher tyre prices and that such action was at least partly facilitated via public communications. The named tyremakers have all already denied price fixing and stated their compliance with the law and their cooperation with investigations in relation the EC investigation.

Apollo Tyres appoints new sales manager in France
Apollo Tyres has appointed Olivier Pataud as country sales manager for France. He succeeds Francois Hien, who becomes the company’s new “head of customer experience projects” operating across all of the company’s product groups in France. Pataud joined Apollo Tyres last year as a key account manager for the Passenger Car Tyre division.
