Officially launched at the Tyre Industry Conference in October last year, the NTDA Tyre Technician Professional Development Scheme is intended to act as a form of self-regulation for the tyre retail industry and will increase the flexibility of tyre technicians by providing them with a nationally-recognised licence designed to demonstrate their competency wherever they choose to work.
In early January VMI launched a new company website. According to the tyre manufacturing machinery maker, the new site is entirely styled in the firm’s new corporate branding. It is also said to features “more information on the VMI products and services”. Company representatives explained that the site has been designed to give “an improved browser experience with easy navigation and is furthermore optimized for mobile usage”.
National Tire Company (NTC) has unveiled plans to build a greenfield car and truck tyre factory in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The goal is to focus on “premium” tyre production only.
The investment is owned by HRH Prince Fahad Bin Abdul-Rahman Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud. According to NTC, the plant will be the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and “one of the biggest and most modern individual tyre factories in the world”. The factory will make 16 million car tyres and 6 million truck tyres a year, with a workforce of 4000 at full capacity.
NTC will work with the Finnish Black Donuts Engineering Inc in the construction of the factory.

Research and Markets published its “Global Commercial Vehicle Tire Pressure Management System (TPMS) Market 2017-2021” report in December. In it the analysts forecast the global commercial vehicle tyre pressure management system (TPMS) market to grow at a CAGR of 10.38 per cent during the period 2017-2021.
During the last Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe reminded drivers to check their TPMS is working and be aware that it does not warn drivers of the condition of their tyres nor the amount of tread depth.
Vehicles first used after 1 January 2012 and equipped with a TPMS fitted by the vehicle manufacturer must have a functioning system to pass the MoT test. While typically reliable, drivers do need to check their car’s TPMS to ensure it’s working on a regular basis as the system can fail and batteries in the wheel-mounted sensors can run out.
During the busy tyre change-over seasons, it is vital that TPMS sensor replacement is made as quick and easy as possible for servicing technicians – says sensor-maker Hamaton, which adds that its Hamaton’s OE-R sensor is “an economical solution that allows garages to save a substantial amount of time and money when it comes to sensor replacement”.
