Giti Tire USA recently received a US manufacturing award from Walmart for its commitment to produce American made tyres. The tyremaker was recognized in front of thousands of Walmart suppliers on 31 January at the Walmart Supplier Growth Forum in Bentonville, Arkansas.The event was for offshore manufacturers who have initiated manufacturing operations in the US.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber has been fined $69,058 for alleged safety hazards at its facility in Social Circle, Georgia, the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported. The fines were issued in late January.
Nokian Tyres recently received the Bronze Class distinction in the Auto Components category of the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook 2018, which was published last week. RobecoSAM is an expert on sustainability whose annual assessment is considered to be a particularly reliable and comprehensive report of how sustainability is implemented in companies around the world.
Back in July 2016 a survey of tyre tread depth when brought in for replacement by safety organisation TyreSafe in collaboration with Highways England produced disturbing results. Of nearly 102,000 tyres checked from 810 British retailers almost a quarter were illegal for road use – the equivalent of 10 million potentially dangerous tyres. More worrying was the report that there’s an upward trend in the percentage of tyres with illegal tread depths on replacement (66% percent in 2015 and 70% in 2016). TyreSafe’s alarming prediction was that ‘higher numbers of dangerous and illegal tyres will be driven on the UK’s road’s in 2017’.
The news that commercial vehicle tyre registration took effect on 1 February has been met with lots of questions from inside the trade. At the most panicked end of the spectrum, some wholesalers fear that all Chinese-produced truck tyres could end up being subject to at least a 30 per cent levy.
On 1 February the European Commission began implementing regulation (EU) 2018/163, making imports of new and retreaded commercial vehicle tyres originating from China subject to registration. The news follows the initiation of anti-dumping proceedings on 11 August 2017 and anti-subsidy proceedings on 14 October 2017.
The car tyre market is growing in size – at least in terms of rim diameter. According to the latest UK car tyre market sell-out data produced by market research specialists GfK, 39 per cent of market is now made up of 17-inch and larger rim diameter products. And what’s more the trend points to continued growth. The GfK Point of Sales Tracking data compares figures from January to December 2016 with those from January 2017 to December 2017 in order to produce the comparisons published here.

A year after we predicted that car tyre prices would rise during 2017 as part of last year’s car tyre feature, the latest data provided by tyre market research specialists Encircle Marketing shows that prices are indeed recovering.
