From 1 October 2018, Nokian Tyres will proudly partner Scottish Mountain Rescue in a three-year sponsorship deal. The agreement will see all Scottish Mountain Rescue vehicles fitted with Nokian Tyres’ most recent and innovative products.

Hankook is suppling tyres for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo in a development the company sees as completing its luxury OE portfolio. Hankook already provides both UHP summer and winter tyres for the BMW 7 Series. The BMW group’s new Gran Turismo will now also be delivered with Ventus S1 evo 2 ultra-high performance (UHP) run-flat summer tyres. The tyres were developed in Hanover and are produced at the company’s European factory in Hungary. Specifically, the car will be supplied with special 245/45 R19 98Y RSC front and 275/40 R19 101Y RSC rear run-flat sizes.
Hankook has launched its new Ventus S1 Evo 3 tyre at driving event in Slovenia. The UHP market-orientated tyre, which was informally described as a “sporty summer tyre” will be available in 17 to 22-inch sizes in order to supply fitments to vehicles from the Mercedes A series right up to the likes of Lamborghini.
Maxxis is joining forces with German electric carmaker e.GO. The strategic partnership will see Maxxis create tyres for the manufacturer’s future models. The latest e.Go to be launched is the aptly named ‘Life’. Being fully electric, the car will produce more torque than its comparable combustion-powered peers, which will present Maxxis with some very specific development challenges. The brand is set to re-engineer its premium sports tyre, the Victra Sport 5, to fit the ‘Life’, with modifications to include a unique sidewall design to help balance strength, performance and durability on the roads. Being OE on the TX electric taxi means Maxxis has plenty of experience in producing tyres for electric vehicles, making it the perfect partner for e.Go.
The NTDA Roadside Emergency Action Concerning Technicians (REACT) scheme hit a new milestone on Tuesday 18 September when Commercial Tyre Technician Keiran Smith of Lodge Tyre Company in Stafford received the 5000th certificate and Licence to Work Safely at the Roadside at Lodge House, the company’s impressive corporate headquarters in Stafford.
Smith, who is from Worcester and works at Lodge Tyre’s Droitwich depot on Berryhill Industrial Estate, was trained by Roadside Safety Training UK Ltd one of the founding members of the REACT scheme.
Looking at the market as a whole, online tyre prices have fallen on average since the start of 2018. According to the latest data supplied by market research specialists at Encircle Marketing, online tyre prices in August 2018 were 1 per cent lower on average than in January. Continental has presented the latest development of its digital tyre monitoring platform. ContiConnect Live, available from the second quarter of 2019, informs operators of truck and bus fleets immediately if there is a problem with the temperature or pressure of a tyre, even when the vehicle is on the road. The data is transferred to the servers and the web portal by the ContiConnect Driver app, which is also new. Before the end of this year, the app will be able to show tyre information on Daimler Fleetboard and TomTom Telematics devices as well as other Android devices, such as smartphones and tablets, initially in the driver’s cab. With ContiConnect Live, Continental presented a further development of the portfolio that has already been successfully launched in 15 markets as ContiConnect Yard, which works using a yard reader station in the fleet yard.
Pirelli has renewed its Cyber Fleet solution, launching the latest version at the 67th edition of the Hannover IAA Commercial Vehicle show. The new edition of the system focuses on two technologies – Cyber Fleet Smart and Cyber Fleet Gate. According to the company, these solutions have been designed to optimize management costs, increase safety and efficiency when it comes to tyres, reduce both vehicle downtime and CO2 emissions.
LeasePlan Corporation N.V., known for its Car-as-a-Service concept, and SAIC Mobility Europe, a division of China’s largest vehicle manufacturer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to bring the first large full electric Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) to continental Europe. Bridgestone has launched FleetPulse a three-in-one solution composed of a mobile app, a centralised website and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) hardware. FleetPulse reportedly improves transparency related to vehicle health in order to significantly reduce the likelihood of costly and potentially dangerous breakdowns, thus increasing time on the roads while ensuring high safety standards. FleetPulse, which automates roadworthiness checks, will also help fleets to simplify their operations and reduce maintenance costs – two other key challenges for fleets.
Kal Tire’s Gravity Assist System (GAS) recently received top honours in the category of International Mechanical and Technology Innovation, mainly for its simplicity and effectiveness.
The average mining tyre has a lot of lug nuts. Until now, support for the hefty 36-kilogram torque gun came through the sheer brawn of the tyre technician. Today, the GAS essentially renders the activity and the torque gun ‘weightless,’ making the process safer, more efficient and precise. The system reduces common risks associated with torque gun tasks, including pinched fingers, muscle strain and fatigue.
