A full grid of 32 entries will compete for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship again in 2014, the headline sponsor and tyre supplier has confirmed. All 32 available TOCA BTCC Licences (TBLs) were allocated during the pre-registration process, which closed on 30 November. TOCA, the series organiser, has introduced TBLs for next year with the goal of providing teams with longer-term stability and security.
Dunlop has helped Oak Racing to claim the 2013 LMP2 World Endurance Championship (WEC), and G-Drive Racing to a race victory at the 6 Hours of Bahrain, the final round of the 2013 series. Dunlop Engineer, Matt Rees congratulated Oak Racing “for the championship win and having the #24 car in second place in the series. They have had a good season and deserve the title.”
Cooper Tire has announced its plan to open a 6,800m2 distribution centre in conjunction with logistics expert, Milsped, in Belgrade, Serbia. The facility will be located alongside Milsped’s corporate headquarters in the Krnjesevci area of Belgrade. Due to open in December, the centre will have a storage capacity of up to 400,000 tyres.
PFC Brakes has been chosen as official brake supplier to Renault Sport Technologies for its new Clio RS R3T rally car. The company’s pads, discs and calipers incorporate innovations, such as piston cap insulators, which reduce temperature transfer to the brake fluid by as much as 55˚C, minimising the risk of boiling the fluid. This should help the brakes to deliver better performance on tarmac and gravel while adhering to stringent cost and technical requirements set for the category.
Litchfield has released its latest ‘cloning’ Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors, designed for GT-R owners needing to run multiple wheel-sets. Aimed at solving a problem for its GT-R driving clients, Litchfield says the sensors will be a useful addition to extra winter or track wheels, as drivers will not have to recode the sensors each time they are change.
Giti Tire has been recognised for its contribution to this October’s Tyre Safety Month, having been presented with the TyreSafe Manufacturer Award. The manufacturer undertook several initiatives through its network of 220 GT Radial Performance Centres (GTPCs) during 2013, culminating in October’s Tyre Safety Month. Each GTPC received joint-branded customer information packs with posters, leaflets and Mr McIntyre animations.
Ibstock’s Jeff Fowkes Wheels has been rewarded for “an amazing level of effort to raise awareness about tyre safety issues” with the inaugural TyreSafe Independent Garage Award. TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson presented Grace Fowkes from the family run Leicestershire business with the award at a prestigious luncheon.
ADAC Nordrhein has announced the scheduling of a Qualifying Race for the 24h Nürburgring on 5-6 April 2014. Walter Hornung, race director of the ADAC Zurich 24h Race and head of motorsports at ADAC Nordrhein, explained that the idea was to offer teams an “optimum testing opportunity… without the pressure of a championship.”
Hankook has won an SUV original equipment fitment deal with BMW. The tyre manufacturer will supply a newly developed SUV version of its flagship ultra high performance tyre, the Ventus S1 evo2, to the third generation X5. Hankook plans to launch the tyre, which will be manufactured mainly at its Hungarian facility, on replacement markets in spring 2014.

Michelin will provide three tyre lines as original equipment on Porsche’s new Macan SUV. Most notably, the French tyre manufacturer’s new Latitude Sport 3 will make its debut on the SUV, while the Latitude Alpin 2 will equip the Macan with a winter fitment and the Latitude Tour HP all-season tyre will be used for the SUV’s American release, in addition to some other specific regions. The Sport 3 and Tour HP are available in three size specifications, while the Alpin 2 will be supplied in one size specification.
Continental has opened its new ContiLifeCycle Plant at its Hanover-Stöcken facility alongside the launch of its Technology Center Campus. With various other retreading and technology centres around the world, the facilities are characterised as nuclei for Conti’s global technological operations; Conti both sends “out into the world” its technological innovations from the Campus, in the words of Tire Division head and Executive Board member, Nikolai Setzer, and brings in specialists and their expertise from global markets to help develop technology for different markets. The LifeCycle Plant is thought to be the most technologically advanced retreading facility in the world, integrating into the manufacturing processes improved rubber recycling capabilities.

The author of four books on motorcycle adventures is a long-term user of the Gripster, which he says has allowed him “to ride in some of the most remote parts of our planet”.
