The BBC has ended its television coverage of Formula One early as part of measures to plug a £150 million annual gap in its finances identified by the corporation’s director general. The BBC regained the broadcast rights to F1 in 2009, and agreed a shared package with Sky Sports during a previous round of cost-saving measures in 2012. 10 of the 2015 season’s grands prix were broadcast live on the BBC, with extensive highlights of the remaining nine races. The radio commentary rights – currently held by BBC Radio 5 live – have been extended until 2021.
Dmack has extended its support for British rallying with the creation of the Dmack Junior BRC category. The tyre brand will offer a subsidised prize drive in the 2017 Drive Dmack Fiesta Trophy, worth £60,000, to the winning driver. Dmack stated that the series creates a career ladder to help bring young drivers from club rallying level in the UK to the top of the FIA World Rally Championship. As part of the package, the Junior BRC category will be supplied by Dmack tyres throughout the 2016 season.
GT Radial’s REE Tread retreading programme has added the size 315/70R22.5 to its GDR690 drive tyre range. The size has been chosen to specifically target UK fleet operators looking to maximise price per kilometre, the company stated. Standing for “reliable, economical and environmental”, the GT REE Tread portfolio comprises the company’s hot cure bead-to-bead remoulds.
Remus has expanded its range of exhaust systems with a fitment for the popular Audi A3 convertible 8V. The system’s features include a lightweight construction, options for both the 1.4 and 1.8 models and the ability to fit with the firm’s Powerizer and Responder systems. The core of the system consists of a series of stainless steel tubes, fully EEC homologated centre sections and, for the lower capacity 1.4 engine, a stainless steel racing tube to replace the OE front silencer. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has renewed its call for deployment of the French military to protect HGV drivers. Foj’s Toyota Land Cruiser 150 is similar to the models in which he claimed two Dakar victories, and he will fit the recently launched Cooper Discoverer STT Pro tyres. Unveiled in October 2015 the new tyre is designed specifically for adventurous driving, with balanced performance characteristics across a range of off-highway surfaces – sand, tarmac, and even the thickest mud.
Goodyear has launched the next generation of its ultra-high performance summer tyre, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. The tyre is the latest in the Eagle series that has given the manufacturer many test wins and a track record of original equipment homologation.
