Kraiburg TPE has opened a UK subsidiary. The thermoplastic elastomers company says this strategic move shows its commitment to “serving the important UK market directly,” from which it will enhance service to local customers. Kraiburg TPE cites the UK as a long-term “pivotal market”. It is opening a subsidiary because “evolving dynamics presented challenges in maintaining optimal service standards since 2020.” The new company will collaborate with its longstanding partner, Abbey Polymers. In January 2024, Kraiburg TPE UK initiated its business and warehousing operations, including a dedicated sales office in Stafford and a strategically located warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent.

Toyo supplied a racing version of its Open Country M/T 4×4 tyre to several competitors in the SCORE Baja 500 took place (Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico; 29 May to 2 June). Marking the UK’s introduction of the Automated Vehicles Act on 20 May 2024, which means autonomous vehicles could appear on British roads in 2026, road safety organisation TyreSafe has underlined the safety-critical role tyres and regular tyre maintenance will play in maintaining their safety. Studies show that autonomous vehicles could potentially benefit road safety and the economy, but their systems and components must be in good working order to allow them to operate properly. Tyres are the only component on a vehicle which has a direct influence on the performance of a vehicle’s braking, steering and acceleration inputs. If tyres are unroadworthy, the vehicle will not accelerate, brake or steer to its optimum level.

Following Friday’s free practice at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier Pirelli noted the presence of five drivers from five different teams in the top five places, saying the grid looks “very evenly matched.” The quickest time was set by Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes (1’13”264) with fifth placed Max Verstappen in the Red Bull (1’13”504) making a gap of only 340 thousandths covering five drivers. In between were Carlos Sainz (1’13”286) in the Ferrari, Lando Norris in the McLaren (1’13”319) and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly (1’13”443).

Goodyear ran its largest ever 24 Hours of Le Mans operation to demonstrate the long-distance performance of both its slick and wet tyres in the 2024 edition of the iconic endurance race. Mixed conditions throughout the race set the stage for a strategic battle in both the LMP2 and new LMGT3 classes. Goodyear supplied tyres for 39 cars across two classes, almost two-thirds of the entire grid at Le Mans, using 7,500 tyres, serviced by expert tyre fitters working in shifts throughout the race to remove, inspect and replace a set of tyres in as little as three minutes. In the pit lane, a crew of 18 track support engineers worked directly with each team throughout the race to advise on setup and strategy.
