Yokohama-sponsored Chelsea FC Women awarded league title

Yokohama-sponsored Chelsea FC, have been named champions of the 2019/20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League. With a game in hand, the Blues were in second place and a point behind Manchester City when the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a meeting by the FA board, it was decided to finish the league prematurely and award the title on a points-per-game basis. In addition to securing victory for Chelsea, the decision also confirms the team’s qualification for next season’s Women’s Champions League.

Cooper Tire equips UK mountain search and rescue teams

Cooper Tire Europe has increased its involvement in UK mountain search and rescue operations. The tyre manufacturer is providing support to teams across England and Wales. As part of the initiative, several teams are now equipped with Cooper 4×4 tyres.

Absolute Alignment sales ‘back to pre-lockdown level’

Four wheel alignment equipment supplier, Absolute Alignment says its May sales have “matched pre-lockdown figures in March.” The company has adapted its work practices to protect customers and staff and adhere to government pandemic guidelines. Social distancing measures are followed during every installation and each training session for workshop personnel. The business has also turned to online demonstrations.

Giti upgrades GDM686 mixed service truck tyre, increasing mileage 20%

Giti Tire has introduced a new generation of its Giti GDM686 mixed service drive axle tyre. The new model increases mileage potential by 20 per cent, the manufacturer tells Tyres & Accessories. The manufacturer describes the tyre as one of its most popular products for on/off road vehicles.

Hankook wins platinum medal for CSR engagement, sustainability

Tyre manufacturer Hankook has received a platinum medal for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement. The medal was awarded by the French rating agency Ecovadis in particular recognition of Hankook’s sustainability initiatives. The medal is awarded to companies in the top one per cent of their industry sector.

EU tyre label regulation update published

The European Union has published the new tyre labelling regulation, after it was confirmed by a vote in May. Appearing in the Official Journal of the European Union last Friday, the act will now come into effect as planned on 1 May, 2021.

Nankang opens motorsport showroom at Nürburgring

Nankang Rubber Tire has opened a new showroom at Nürburgring Boulevard, as part of the ATOMIC-SHOP Motorsport Showroom. The manufacturer, which produces racing tyres for global motorsport codes, is the first Taiwanese manufacturer to have a showroom at the Nürburgring.

Polish tyre repairs distributor opens online channel

Arko-Gum, the Polish distributor of Vipal’s line of tyre repair products has launched a new e-commerce website. The company said the new site is “a way of increasing contact with its target audiences and overcoming social isolation,” The website targets B2B sales of its product lines, including the full range of materials from Vipal’s repair line. Arko-Gum has been Vipal’s partner for 10 years, nine of which have been exclusive.

Hankook now on Instagram

Hankook has added Instagram to its social media portfolio. The tyre maker opened its @hankooktire.europe channel on 8 June. It said the channel would offer relevant information to interested and enthusiastic followers of technical content and car topics. It will also focus on the tyre manufacturer’s sporting and motorsport activities.

50% drop in tyre sales in Q2 – Goodyear

Goodyear has estimated that it will register a 50 per cent drop in quarter two tyre sales versus 2019. The US manufacturer reported the estimate in an SEC stock exchange filing. It said that global Q2 sales are set to be 18.7 million in 2020, compared to 37.4 million in the same period in 2019.

Nordexx launches first all-season tyre

Private brand Nordexx, from Denmark’s NDI Group, has launched its first all-season tyre for cars and vans. The NA6000 targets “a gap in the market for affordable all-season tyres,” Admir Ramic, Nordexx export manager, tells Tyres & Accessories. The Nordexx brand is exported to 61 countries around the world.

UHP tyres one-third of European replacement market by 2024: Astutus

Leading tyre market data analyst Astutus Research has predicted that the European trend for higher performance tyres looks set to continue. The analyst’s report, ‘Future Dynamics of the European PCLT Tire Industry’, published in association with Tyrepress, has been updated for 2019 with an eye to the trends of the next five years. The analyst states: “The movement towards tyres with a higher rim diameter is clear within the European PCLT tyre replacement market. This reflects the trend towards larger tyres on new car models and changes in the composition of the car parc, with a greater share of SUVs. The replacement market reflects the changes in the original equipment segment, albeit with a lag.

Growth in upper UHP tyre sizes continues

The latest GfK data based on its tyre retail sell-out sources – what it refers to as its panelmarket – shows that UHP tyre sizes, especially above 17″, continued to represent a growing market in 2019. The analyst compared UHP tyres, here defined as 17” and above, in the period from January 2018 to December 2018 with January 2019 to December 2019. The first column shows that 17” takes a share of the total tyre market of just over one-fifth (21 per cent). 17” has been a popular size for many years, benefitting from the transition of more compact cars onto higher rim sizes. However, growth in 17” dimensions has now plateaued, with this figure representing no change on the previous year’s data.

Shapps: MOT extension plans ‘under review’

The Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has responded to a letter requesting the six-month MOT extension to be reconsidered. The Indepent Garage Association (IGA) asked for the extension to be reassessed with car utilisation increasing after Coronavirus lockdown restrictions were eased. In response, Shapps explained that plans to stop the extension are constantly under review. The IGA said this mirrors the association’s desire to meet the safety measures required to end the MOT extension.
