Drawing upon experience gained during its 15 years as official tyre supplier to the FIM Superbike World Championship, Pirelli says it has now merged its best technologies from racetrack and road to produce the Diablo Rosso Corsa II. This latest member of the Diablo family will be available worldwide from January 2018.
The AlloyGator wheel protector has an opportunity for growth as motorists battle alloy wheel damage caused by hitting potholes. Hitting the side of a pothole can cause scrapes, scuffs and dents to alloy wheels resulting in expensive repair bills or even the need for replacements – all of which can be avoided by fitting AlloyGators, the company states. With the winter months sure to exacerbate the pothole problem, due to frozen water expanding cracks in the road, AlloyGator is increasing its efforts to roll out its product to more tyre retailers.
Following a year off in 2017, Pirelli will return to the World Rally Championship from next year. The tyre maker has already homologated new products for the latest generation of WRC car as well as the feeder WRC2 category. In addition, from next year Pirelli also commences exclusive tyre supply for the Junior World Rally Championship, a series dedicated to drivers born later than 1 January 1989 and contested using identical R2-class Ford Fiestas. The winner will become the owner of a brand-new Fiesta R5 together with a tyre, fuel and free rally entries package towards the 2019 WRC2 season.
If Pirelli’s sale to the ChemChina-led consortium in 2015, along with the legal and integration work in 2016 wasn’t enough, 2017 is proving to have been another complex and busy year for Pirelli. The last 12 months have seen the company pass two key landmarks in its post-acquisition strategy: the separation of the industrial tyre business (including industrial, truck, OTR and agricultural operations) into the new Prometeon Tyre Group in the first part of year; and the successful re-listing of the Pirelli in the autumn. The latest news is that Pirelli’s major shareholder – Marco Polo International – has increased its shareholding in Pirelli following the IPO by exercising a greenshoe option.

Islington Council has gone a step further than the Mayor of London by proposing to impose on all diesel vehicles – including Euro 6 diesels and diesel hybrids – a £2 per hour visitor parking surcharge from early next year.
GSF Car Parts has continued its rolling branch refurbishment programme with Derby being the latest location to gain an upgrade, following improvements to Smethwick last month. At its inaugural Asia Supplier Award ceremony on 21 November, car accessory sourcing, development and supply specialist MGTS honoured Giti Tire Corporation as ‘Best Spare Parts & Tires Supplier’ and also named it recipient of its ‘Best Corporate Social Responsibility’ accolade. By taking home two of the nine awards given out at the ceremony, Giti Tire notes that it finished “above many other leading global tyre and automotive supply manufacturers.”
Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s presence in China’s replacement tyre market has gained a significant boost by the forging of a strategic partnership with e-commerce giant JD.com. Signed 1 December, the agreement with China’s largest e-commerce platform (by revenue) will place selected Goodyear products on a Goodyear-branded JD.com channel and also see the company’s tyre and automotive services centres, which currently operate in ten cities in China, collaborate with the JD.com automotive platform. Goodyear states that this partnership will result in “seamless omni-channel experiences.”
On 1 January 2018, a new organisational structure will take effect at Nokian Tyres. While the company’s business unit structure – Passenger Car Tyres, Nokian Heavy Tyres and Vianor – will remain unchanged and its external reporting model will continue to include business units and geographical areas, from the start of next year the Passenger Car Tyres business unit will be divided into three new business areas. A new unit, named Products and Technologies, is also being established.
A second Porsche original equipment deal for Nexen Tire: Following last year’s approval of the Nexen N’Fera RU1 for factory fitment on the Cayenne, the tyre has now been given the green light for Porsche’s compact luxury SUV, the Macan. The N’Fera RU1 will be supplied for the Macan in sizes 235/55R19 101Y and 255/50R19 103Y.
Davanti Tyres has appointed Emma Mercer as its new marketing manager. Davanti states that Mercer brings a host of transferable skills to the table in her role as marketing manager, where she will be in charge of managing the marketing of the house brands; Davanti, Landsail and Evergreen.
Workshop equipment distributor Pro-Align’s support for the Skills Show has stretched to half a decade, including the last five years in succession. Trainee vehicle technicians competing in this year’s show were able to gain valuable hands-on experience using some of the most advanced wheel alignment and diagnostic wheel balance systems currently on the market, thanks to this ongoing support. Held over three days at the NEC, Birmingham, competitors took part in a diverse range of practical skills and knowledge tests such as beauty therapy, bricklaying, landscaping, and games design.
Falken’s status as the official tyre partner of Liverpool Football Club is one of the latest in an extended series of tyre and football partnerships. Tyres & Accessories took the opportunity of Falken’s first event at Anfield to ask director and senior executive officer, Sumitomo Rubber Industries Yutaka Kuroda and chief commercial officer and managing director at Liverpool FC Billy Hogan to illustrate how the partnership will be used to benefit both parties. In addition to the particular synergies between the club and tyre brand, their answers also illustrate why there has been such a boom in partnerships between top-tier football clubs and tyres in recent years.
