HELLA and BHAP look to intensify collaboration in China
Lighting and electronics expert HELLA and Chinese BAIC Group company Beijing HAINACHUAN Automotive Parts Co. Ltd. (BHAP) have announced, through a joint statement, that they intend to expand their existing collaboration, which has focused on the development and production of lighting systems for the Chinese market, to cover the electronics and aftermarket business.
Double win for Continental in the Auto Express tyre awards 2017
Continental has scooped top spots in the Auto Express tyre awards 2017 for both its summer and winter products. The Continental ContiPremiumContact 5, and the WinterContact TS 860, both successfully took first place.

NASA offering pneumatic alternative tyre technology for licence
Scientists at NASA’s Glenn Research centre are offering a non-pneumatic tyre up for licence as part the space agency’s technology transfer programme.
The “superelastic” tyre was developed for future Mars missions but is said to be a viable alternative to pneumatic tyres here on Earth. This technology represents the latest evolution of the spring tyre which was invented by NASA Glenn and Goodyear, and inspired by the Apollo lunar tyres.
Further Guizhou Vietnam plant details
Following the initial announcement in April 2017 as well as details given to Tyres & Accessories during an interview in September, Guizhou Advance Tyre has announced further details relating to the expansion of its Vietnam factory plans.
Toyo wins $1.6 million ruling against Doublestar
On 20 November 2017 the United States District Court for the Central District of California held Chinese tyre factories Doublestar Dong Feng Tyre Co., Ltd. (DDF) and Qingdao Doublestar Tire Industrial Co., Ltd. (QDT) in contempt for violating a 2014 Final Judgment prohibiting the manufacture and sale of tyres using a confusingly similar tread to that of Toyo’s best-selling Open Country M/T. DDF and QDT were held in contempt for selling the AMP M/T tyre, which was deemed to be too similar.
Toray admits tyre cord data falsification
At the end of November, Japan’s Toray Industries admitted to 149 cases of quality data falsification at a materials-making subsidiary that span eight years. According to a report by Reuters, the firm said the cheating involved tyre-strengthening cord that was sold to 13 clients by Toray Hybrid Cord.
Campaign suggests tyre underinflation present in more than half of UK cars
As part of its activities to support Tyre Safety Month in October, ATS Euromaster tested the tyre pressures of more than 1,000 cars at 28 of its centres across the UK. What it found was that 55 per cent of those vehicles – 561 cars – had at least one underinflated tyre. This high figure closely tallies with the 57 per cent recorded by industry association TyreSafe as part of its ‘Bad Air Day’ campaign.
AvanTech: Sentury Tire launches US tyre subscription scheme
Sentury Tire is launching a new tyre subscription scheme in the USA. The company, which is currently in the process of setting up a new production facility within the country, has launched a service there under the AvanTech name.
Two Goodyear tyre models OE on new Audi A8
Deliveries of the fourth-generation Audi A8 are expected to begin in January, and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 and UltraGrip Performance Gen-1 tyres have been approved as original equipment fitments for the new saloon. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 summer tyre will be available in sizes 255/45R19 104Y XL – in both standard and Ultra-Low Rolling Resistance versions – as well as size 265/40R20 104Y XL. The UltraGrip Performance Gen-1 winter tyre will be available in sizes 235/55R18 104H XL and 265/40R20 104V XL.
Goodyear & Sandia Labs mark 25 years of tyre design collaboration
A partnership between Goodyear Tire & Rubber and US-based engineering and science body Sandia National Laboratories, forged to improve tyre design, is quarter of a century old this month. Marking the milestone, the tyre maker notes that the joint work has helped reduce product development time and boost efficiency.
