Michelin Promotes Power Pure with Complimentary Weight Saving Exhaust

Michelin continues to promote the weight advantages it says its Power Pure motorcycle tyre offers to sportsbike riders – the French giant says that a set of the tyres in sizes 120/70 ZR 17 and 190/50 ZR 17 saves two pounds (around 900 grams) in weight compared to tyres produced in the same category by four of Michelin’s major brand competitors. In the promotion, motorcyclists buying and fitting a pair of Michelin Power Pure tyres between 1 May and 30 June will receive a free Michelin Man digital pressure gauge, and have a chance to win one of 20 Akrapovic slip-on exhausts, making their bikes lighter still.

Bridgestone India Raises Output, Implements 3.5% Price Hike

Bridgestone has said that it will produce 1,500 more tyres per day and raise the price of its tyres by 3.5 per cent in India, according to a newswire issued by Dow Jones. The rise comes on the back of increased raw materials prices, Bridgestone India general manager of sales and marketing, Vaibhav Saraf told the assembled throng at a news conference, Dow Jones NewsPlus reports.

Vipal and Fate Sign US$200 million Tyre Factory Memorandum of Understanding

Brazilian company Vipal, best known for its tyre retreading and repair materials, and Argentine tyremaker Fate have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rio Grande do Sul State of Southern Brazil to set up a new tyre factory. The first bi-national industrial collaboration in the state, the Vipal/Fate project sees the companies invest around US$200 million in building a “farm equipment” and “aftermarket car parts” tyre plant. There has been no official confirmation of what brand the new tyres will be produced under, but Tyres & Accessories understands that this means production will focus on passenger car and van tyres.

IFC to Invest in Apollo Greenfield Plant

The International Finance Corporation has agreed to partially finance Apollo Tyres’ new greenfield facility in Tamil Nadu, India. On April 22 the World Bank organisation stated that, pending the consent of its Board on May 26, it will furnish Apollo with a financial package of US$60 million. Phase 1 of the plant, located in Oragadam near Chennai, is nearing completion, and the commercial production of tyres there began in the first week of March 2010.

Avon’s Lewis Appointed MD of Cooper International Trading Company

Nigel Lewis, currently purchasing director for Avon Tyres in Melksham, will as of June 1 take on the role of managing director of Cooper Tire International Trading Company in Singapore. In this capacity he will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the Singapore buying office and procurement of natural rubber.

UAE Distributor ZAFCO Announces Retail Plans

One of the Middle East’s leading tyre distribution companies has announced its plan to open 65 automotive service outlets by 2012 at a dinner for its United Arab Emirates partners. ZAFCO is a supplier to the UAE domestic market, and a global supplier to customers in the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Australia, has revealed details of its ambitious expansion plans. The Dubai-based company is set to launch its own chain of premium quality retail outlets across the GCC.

Falken CEO Named Sumitomo Executive Officer

Falken Tire Corporation chairman and CEO Yasushi (Tank) Tanaka has been promoted to executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Falken’s parent company, reports Tire Review. Tanaka will continue to head Falken’s North America business. Tanaka joined SRI in 1976, and has spent the majority of his career in the export and OE departments of SRI and SRI Tire Trading Ltd.

Forbes Ranks Goodyear 40th “Most Reputable” US Company

Forbes Magazine has published its fifth annual list of the companies with the best reputation in the USA, with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company ranked 40th. Goodyear says the list is based on the Reputation Institute’s US Reputation Pulse consumer opinion survey, which aims to measure the overall respect, trust, esteem, admiration and good feelings consumers hold toward the country’s 150 largest companies.

Kumho’s Creditors Fund $1.08 Billion Capital Injection

The Korea Development Bank has led a band of Kumho creditors in signing a 1.2 trillion won ($1.08 billion) agreement; half in a debt-for-equity swap and half in new capital. Ahn Yang-soo, senior director of KDB and the executive in charge of Kumho’s debt, told the Korea Times: “Creditors agreed to assist Kumho. We will switch company debts into stocks. We also will give additional capital to help the company manage its businesses. We think the rescue plan will provide Kumho the momentum to turn its business around.’’

Tubestone Reports 2009 Sales Growth

Tyres & Accessories’ representative on the ground at Tyrexpo Africa reported back that one of the more impressive stands at the Johannesburg show belong to Tubestone. Its aesthetic promotional effectiveness, he added, could perhaps in part be measured by the fact that the stand appeared to be one of the busiest. Or perhaps visitors were simply interested in the wide range of tubes and passenger car, LDV; truck; light truck; agricultural; industrial and mining tyres sold by the South African business.

Michelin has signed its name on the dotted line to continue sponsorship of the MPG Marathon, an annual event organised by Fleet World Magazine. Now in its eighth year, in 2010 the MPG Marathon takes place at Ettington Chase, near Stratford-upon-Avon, on September 15 and 16. Participants will once again have the opportunity to show that skilful driving can mileage per gallon – or kilometers per litre, if that’s more your cup of tea – way beyond manufacturers’ own estimates.

Sold – American Tire Distributors Changing Hands for $1.3 Billion

North America’s largest independent tyre distributor has changed hands for approximately US$1.3 billion. In a deal announced on April 21, Equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG Capital) has purchased American Tire Distributors from Investcorp, Berkshire Partners and Greenbriar Equity Group, who acquired the distributor for $500 million in 2005. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2010. Pursuant to the acquisition, American Tire will suspend its planned public offering and listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

Yokohama Extends Presence in US Isuzu Dealerships

A new commercial vehicle dealer programme with Isuzu Commercial Vehicle Truck of America gives Yokohama Tire access to Isuzu truck dealerships across the US. Yokohama will supply its full range of commercial vehicle tyres through participating dealers and provide point of sale information for on-site display.

Cooper Appoints Director, Pricing and Program Management

Cooper Tire & Rubber has appointed Jon Huffman to the role of director, Pricing and Program Management. In his new position, Huffman will oversee all aspects of pricing, and will also assume responsibility for Cooper's three retail stores in Findlay, Ohio, Texarkana, Arkansas, and Tupelo, Mississippi.

Conti Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at California Distribution Centre

The Redlands, California distribution centre opened by Continental Tire the Americas earlier this year is now operating at full capacity, and to mark the occasion an official ribbon cutting ceremony and ‘open house’ was held on April 15. The 46,500 square metre warehouse consolidates the operations of two smaller California based warehouses, and provides Continental with enough space to store and distribute over 450,000 passenger car, light truck and commercial vehicle tyres. Conti estimates that two million tyres will be moved through the Redlands site each year.
