Pirelli supplies bespoke P Zero Elect to Hyundai Ioniq 5 N performance electric car

Pirelli is supplying a specially developed version of its P Zero tyre for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the manufacturer’s first high-performance electric car. Developed to meet the additional dynamic requirements of the sporty EV in a two-year collaboration, Pirelli and Hyundai tested the tuned P Zero on the demanding Nürburgring circuit to prove its performance in extreme driving conditions. The P Zero also offers performance, reliability, and comfort for everyday driving.
Pirelli equipped the bespoke P Zero with its Elect technology for electric cars and plug-in hybrids for the Ioniq 5 N. The P Zero Elect includes innovative compounds, tread patterns and structures to improve its performance for EVs. It has a reinforced structure made with materials to withstand the stresses associated with the mass and high torque of a battery-powered vehicle. Pirelli adds that the use of functionalised polymers in the compound has resulted in improved wet grip and handling. The tyre also features the Pirelli Noise Cancelling System (PNCS), a sound-absorbing material on the inside of the tyre to capitalise on the quieter ride of EVs.
Pirelli said its engineers paid special attention to driving dynamics in the design of the bespoke tyre, refining the tread design and construction. They optimised the groove depth and tread block dimensions to improve traction and stability and provide excellent grip on different surfaces. They also precisely tuned the stiffness of the tyre for a responsive and controlled driving experience both on the track and on normal roads. Pirelli added that its development team used innovative virtual simulation tools to develop the P Zero for the Ioniq 5 N, in particular to optimise the structure.
In addition to the summer tyre, Pirelli has also developed a special version of the Winter Sottozero 3 tyre for the Ioniq 5 N. The Winter Sottozero 3 offers optimum traction and control in cold temperatures. Pirelli also offers the P Zero Corsa for enhanced traction and braking on track and road.
The Ioniq 5 N version of the Pirelli P Zero has a special ‘HN’ marking on the sidewall, demonstrating Pirelli’s “Perfect Fit strategy”. The tyre manufacturer works with leading car manufacturers to develop customised tyres precisely tailored to the technical requirements of each model. Pirelli occupies a leading position in global original equipment tyres, especially in the premium and prestige segments, as a result.
