Cybertruck wheel covers causing excessive tyre wear

‘Form follows function’ is typically the rule, with intended use influencing a product’s design. However, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla hasn’t quite achieved this with its Cybertruck, at least when it developed the vehicle’s aerodynamically shaped wheel coverings.
These ‘Aero Covers’ may be streamlined, but it appears they can damage the Cybertruck’s tyres. This is because the plastic cover protrudes beyond the edge of the rim, particularly where the seven ‘fingers’ marking out the cover’s spoked design end. Whenever adjacent to the contact patch, these fingers push into the tyre’s sidewall and cause additional wear over time.
This issue is clearly explained in a video published by the YouTube channel T Sportline. Cybertruck owners who have reported damage after just a few thousand miles are cited as proof that this is not just a theoretical problem. In addition, the vehicle manufacturer has allegedly recommended removing the wheel covers in question until a revised version is available, probably from March.
