CDP report card – Nokian Tyres gains an A-

CDP has given Nokian Tyres an A- for its actions towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change-related risks. This is the fourth consecutive year that CDP has awarded Nokian Tyres an A- for its work in this area, and the Finnish company notes that scores of A and A- in the annual CDP Climate Change report represent “leadership level.”
CDP is a non-profit organisation that helps companies and other entities disclose their environmental impact. It scores organisations from D- to A based on the comprehensiveness and transparency of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks, and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership.
“For Nokian Tyres, concrete sustainability actions and results are what matters. For example, the greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) from Nokian Tyres’ tyre production in relation to turnover and production tons were again clearly the lowest of the companies that have tyre industry as their main industry in the CDP reports,” says Teppo Huovila, vice president, Quality, Sustainability and Supply Operations Business Development.
CO2 reduction ahead of schedule
In 2023 Nokian Tyres reached a key science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction target seven years ahead of schedule, reducing its tyre factories’ direct CO2 emissions by 52 per cent per production tonne by 2030 compared to the 2015 emissions level. It achieved this target last year; however, it is unclear what role (if any) the sale of the tyre plant in Vsevolozhsk, Russia played here. Nokian Tyres also committed to setting targets to reach science-based net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
To reduce emissions from tyre production, in 2023 Nokian Tyres started the construction of its new factory in Romania to replace the lost output from Vsevolozhsk. This plant will be the first zero CO2 emissions factory in the tyre industry. Additionally, Nokian Tyres joined the Polestar 0 project that aims to create a climate-neutral car by 2030. Nokian Tyres is contributing to the project by “developing climate-neutral premium tyres.”
