Murata shows tyre RFID at CES 2024

The Murata stand at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, USA has been designed to showcase a range of the company’s chip and Internet of Things (IoT) products including tyre RFID. Specifically, Murata’s embeddable RAIN RFID Tire Tags add a digital ID to track tyres throughout the entire supply chain. Applications include manufacturing, automotive OEM, logistics and transportation, dealer and retail, retread contractor, and end-of-life.
In 2021, Murata announced it had co-developed a new generation of RFID modules embedded into tyres with Michelin. These were described as “robust passive RFID tags” which “require no external power supply and will continue to operate while being driven on for extremely high mileages”. The technology reportedly delivers “low cost and easy tyre traceability throughout its entire lifespan, enabling the management of inventory logistics, aftermarket maintenance, and recycling operations.”
At the time, Michelin said it predominantly uses RFID tags in commercial vehicle tyres, but was “working to roll out the technology to all of its passenger car, light commercial, bus and truck tyres by 2024”.
Michelin has been connected with tyre RFID development since the early 2000s.
