ETRMA members’ replacement tyre sales continue negative trend in Q4 2023

The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has published details of its members’ European replacement market sales for the fourth quarter of 2023. The figures show a year-on-year decline in all market segments.
With 49.989 million pieces sold between 1 October and 31 December 2023, replacement consumer tyre sales were just marginally below those of Q4 2022. Growth in all-season tyre sales and, to a lesser extent, winter tyre sales, counterbalanced a decrease in sales of summer tyres, resulting in a rounded year-on-year variation of zero per cent.
Replacement truck and bus tyre sales declined 13 per cent year-on-year, to 2.759 million tyres. Sales of replacement agricultural tyres fell 17 per cent year-on-year, to 134,000 pieces. With just 978,000 units sold, sales of replacement moto and scooter tyres were down 24 per cent year-on-year.
Full-year 2023
Looking at the annual picture, ETRMA members’ sales in every product category were lower in 2023 than in 2022. The most impacted segments were replacement agricultural tyres (-30%), followed by truck and bus tyres (-17%), moto (-11%) and consumer tyres (-8%).
“The figures confirm the negative trends observed since June 2022,” says Adam McCarthy, ETRMA’s secretary general. “These results are mainly due to a drop in the demand driven by the inflationary costs of raw materials, energy and payroll, as well as to the reduction of inventories in distribution channels.”
