BTMA joins Tire Industry Project as affiliate member

The British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (BTMA) has joined the Tire Industry Project (TIP) as an affiliate member. The Australian Tyre Industry Council (ATIC) and the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) of India have also joined the organisation at the same level. While not contributing to the governance of TIP, affiliates engage with topics within the scope of the project’s mission. Formed in 2005, TIP is built on the pillars of research, action and engagement and communication, bringing a collaborative and scientific approach to sustainability in the tyre sector. Graham Wilson, chief executive of the BTMA, said the organisation is “delighted to enter a fuller and more structured relationship” with TIP, building upon the development of “informal ties” in recent years.
“We are pleased to welcome ATIC, ATMA and BTMA to our growing network,” said TIP executive director, Larisa Kryachkova. “Tyre trade associations are instrumental to the realisation of a sustainable tyre value-chain, and their regional expertise and insights are invaluable in understanding regulatory developments and offering global approaches to tire lifecycle sustainability. TIP builds strength with an increasingly diverse membership that is united by a vision of a world in which the tyre value chain has a positive impact on people and the planet.”
TIP wants to expand its membership to help spread greater understanding of global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues relevant to the tyre industry and its value chain. ATIC, ATMA and BTMA join the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA), the Japan Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association (JATMA), the Korea Tire Manufacturers Association (KOTMA), the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) and the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), who were named as affiliate members in January 2023.
Tire Industry Project history and development
TIP was formed in 2005 with the commitment to a science-driven and collaborative approach to tire-sector sustainability. In February 2022, TIP announced an evolution of its commitment to sustainability, which included a renewed mission, an updated governance structure and the active recruitment of new members.
The updated organizational structure and work program complements TIP’s sustainability-driven program of scientific research and other projects with enhanced action, stakeholder engagement and communication across a suite of ongoing and new projects relevant to ESG in the tire sector. This includes a focus on tire-emission research and mitigation, end-of-life tire management and more effective sustainability assessments.
Silvio de Denaro, chairman of the council, ATIC, said: “Directors and Members of the Australian Tyre Industry Council are delighted that the cooperation, with WBCSD and TIP in particular has finally been formalised. The challenges faced by the tyre industry are becoming increasingly complex and global in their nature and their potential solutions. We have always held TIP in the highest esteem as one of the most active organizations in this domain. Personally, I very much look forward to working with international colleagues and staff from TIP in our common pursuit of a strong and sustainable reality for our industry.”
Anshuman Singhania, chairman of ATMA, added: “TIP’s workplan, with an enhanced focus on sustainability-driven topics of interest and relevance to the global tire industry, such as end-of-life tires and tire abrasion, will provide an excellent platform for discussion and research on areas of common interest as well as for best-practice sharing among stakeholders.”
