Brake shorter with tyre intelligence – Goodyear reports on TNO partnership

In 2021, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company began collaborating with Netherlands-based research organisation TNO into solutions that facilitate communication between a vehicle’s tyres and its anti-lock braking system (ABS). More than three years later, the partners are showcasing their work on integrating tyre intelligence technology into the ABS controller of a test vehicle.
Statistics from US federal government agency the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that more than 1.7 million rear-end crashes occurred in the USA in 2021, accounting for nearly a third of all crashes. Goodyear stresses that integrating tyre intelligence technology into an ABS controller can improve stopping distance performance, potentially helping drivers avoid accidents entirely or reduce the severity of collisions. Collaborative research with TNO and vehicle testing suggest that an improved ABS, equipped with information about the tyre type and characteristics such as wear state, can potentially enhance overall system efficiency and reduce braking distance by as much as 5.75 feet.
Exciting possibilities
“Our collaborative work with TNO has yielded invaluable insights, with exciting possibilities to deliver greater value to our customers and support the future of mobility,” says Werner Happenhofer, Goodyear’s vice president, Tire Intelligence and eMobility solutions. “At Goodyear, we believe that by harnessing the power of tyre intelligence, we can contribute to the bold goal of future mobility to reduce accidents.”
“TNO is dedicated to enhancing the safety, efficiency and sustainability of vehicles,” adds Machteld de Kroon, managing director, Unit Mobility & Built Environment, TNO. “Our collaboration with Goodyear aims to minimise every centimetre of braking distance. We firmly believe that by improving the integration of tyres and braking systems, we can contribute to reducing accidents and ultimately saving lives.”
New era of smart & sustainable mobility
The tyre maker’s current state-of-the-art solution for motorists is Goodyear SightLine, a suite of tyre intelligence technologies that provide line of sight to tyre, vehicle and road conditions through algorithms and real-time monitoring. Goodyear adds that its developments in tyre intelligence technologies are “poised to transform the future of transportation” and usher in a “new era of smart and sustainable mobility.”
