Pollution board orders production stop at Ceat factory
The environmental regulatory body in India’s Maharashtra state has ordered tyre maker Ceat Ltd to pause operations at one of its plants. In notifications supplied to the BSE and National Stock Exchange of India, Ceat reports that the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board told it to “close down operations” at the Bhandup factory in the suburbs of Mumbai. According to Ceat, the Board’s correspondence of 4 November 2023 claims “certain alleged violations of the pollution control norms.”
The RPG Group tyre making subsidiary states that it is “studying the order” and intends to “appropriately act on it.” It assures stakeholders that all Ceat plants operate “consistently in compliance with applicable laws,” adding that the internal standards it follows are “tougher than the prescribed norms.”
The Bhandup plant makes truck and bus, agricultural and specialty tyres. Producing tyres since 1960, it is the oldest of Ceat’s six factories in India.
