Michelin Shanghai factory increases annual car tyre production capacity by 1 million units
On 20 November, Michelin’s Shanghai factory held a groundbreaking ceremony for its expansion project. Michelin plans to increase the production capacity of high-performance, high-value radial passenger tyres at the Shanghai plant while also achieving efficient, clean and flexible production.
The expansion project is planned to be completed by the end of 2026 and will increase the annual production capacity of the Shanghai plant by 1 million units, from 8.5 million to 9.5 million.
Michelin CEO Florent Menegaux attended the groundbreaking ceremony. He said that with the smooth launch of this expansion project, the Shanghai factory will “continue to meet the needs of consumers in the Chinese market with more high-quality and high-performance products”.
Michelin has two tyre manufacturing bases in Shanghai and Shenyang, Liaoning. Tyrepress China learned that the expansion started in November is Michelin’s second upgrade of the Shanghai factory. Beginning in March 2021, Michelin’s Shanghai tyre manufacturing base has undergone an upgrade, including the technical transformation of the radial tyre production line, building a new spare parts and mould warehouse, introducing automated storage devices, upgrading the existing production line logistics system, and improving the layout of the current workshop. Michelin said that the last upgrade project of the Shanghai factory has been completed.
Michelin also emphasised the management of carbon emissions at the Shanghai factory. It is reported that the overall carbon emissions of Michelin’s Shanghai factory have been reduced by 83 per cent compared with 2010 data.
In production and energy, Michelin’s Shanghai factory plans to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent in 2030 compared with 2010. In 2050, the tyre manufacturing base’s production, energy and transportation areas will be entirely carbon neutral.
