First pyrolysis oil made in Pyrum’s expanded plant
Pyrum Innovations has produced the first batch of pyrolysis oil in one of the two new reactors it has installed at its main facility in Germany. Although the Pyrum team has only made “small quantities” of oil so far, this marks a further step towards volume production.
This initial ramping up of Pyrolysis reactor 2 under production conditions involved heating it to the production temperature of approximately 650 °C, feeding granulate into the reactor and testing the dosing system. Technicians then shut down the reactor in a controlled manner.
After continuous test operations begin, Pyrum will gradually increase the throughput of the first new line to 75 per cent. The pyrolysis end-of-life tyre recycler will then implement everything learned from its experiences with Reactor 2 when bringing Reactor 3 into operation. It will also ramp up this unit to 75 per cent throughout before increasing both to 100 per cent in tandem.
“As part of the warm commissioning that started at the end of October, we can announce the next success story,” comments Pascal Klein, chief executive officer of Pyrum Innovations AG. “The first warm-up run was completed as planned, all systems and circuits worked as intended. We will now evaluate the knowledge gained from this and incorporate it into further warm commissioning. After another test run in around two weeks, we plan to carry out the first longer test production run of the reactor in December and to continuously produce pyrolysis oil. Reactor 3 should follow shortly afterwards.”
