Bridgestone debuts algorithm-based mining solution
Bridgestone Corporation has introduced a new mining solution service that uses a proprietary, Bridgestone-developed algorithm to estimate tyre durability. It first introduced this offering in July 2023 to the BHP Group’s Spence copper mine (Pampa Norte operation) in Chile, which also uses the service to propose the optimal timing for tyre timing as well as driving routes for the mine.
An evolution of Bridgestone MasterCore, this new product is powered by an algorithm that combines the tyre maker’s product knowledge, industry experience, and digital capability. The algorithm utilises fleet operating data gleaned from Bridgestone iTrack mining vehicle tyre monitoring systems, such as tyre replacement history, tyre temperature and pressure, vehicle location and driving speed. It brings these together to estimate tyre durability, prevent damage caused by inappropriate tyre maintenance, and to propose the best time for tyre maintenance and optimal driving routes.
A new challenge
“At the Spence mine of BHP-Pampa Norte, we want to improve productivity and reduce waste while also improving the performance and extending the lifespan of our tyres. In this context, we have partnered with Bridgestone to improve monitoring and management in order to sequence optimum maintenance and prevent unscheduled stoppages. We have thus started a new project that is incorporating management tools that are available through Bridgestone’s new technology. We recognise Bridgestone’s willingness to take the challenge, do what needs to be done, and propose improvements,” says Carlos Ruz, mine production manager, BHP Group Limited & Plc.
This mining solution service is a new challenge for Bridgestone to take on,” adds Nobuyuki Tamura, who is responsible for Bridgestone’s G-MICA (Global – Mining, Industrial, Construction, Aviation) business. “It combines our ‘DanTotsu’ (aim of being the clear leader) products with data analysis based on our tyre expertise to deliver new value to customers. I am incredibly pleased that this solution, which was realised through co-creation with the Spence mine of BHP-Pampa Norte, is contributing to improvements in operations. Going forward, Bridgestone will continue working to optimise mining operations and improve resource productivity with unique solutions that are closely tailored to client needs.”
