Top Auto Bild Sportscars rating for 4 winter tyres
Winter tyres are niche products in the UK but make a lot of sense in particular situations. High-powered performance cars, for example, may benefit from the added grip that season-specific rubber provides. Auto Bild Sportscars has evaluated 11 brands of tyre in size 225/40 R18 to gauge performance in snowy, wet and dry conditions. Four tyres gain the motoring publication’s highest recommendation, but Auto Bild Sportscars also warns against bad eggs in the basket.
As a point of comparison, the Auto Bild Sportscars team tested a summer tyre alongside the 11 winter models – and what they encountered is worth bearing in mind. This summer tyre cornered “crisper, more dynamic and faster” – but only as long as temperatures remained in double digits. The downside of modern summer performance tyres is that when temperatures approach zero, rubber tread compounds harden to the extent that they barely provide any grip. “On snow and ice, they are simply undriveable,” comments Auto Bild Sportscars.
The publication declared two tyres joint winners of its 2023 winter test and gave its top ‘exemplary’ rating to a total of four products. A further four tyres gained a ‘good’ rating and one is ‘satisfactory’. Bad news for two budget segment tyres, with Auto Bild Sportscars issuing a warning in place of a recommendation.
