PRA highlights “troubling surge” in numbers of fuel drive-offs
“As pump prices continue to rise, members of the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) are witnessing a troubling surge in fuel drive-offs”, says Gordon Balmer, executive director of the Association. He adds: “This isn’t just a financial concern, it’s a safety and security issue that impacts our communities.
“Recent statistics obtained from Forecourt Eye reveal a troubling trend of drive-offs without paying for fuel and customers who have no means to pay. Based on these trends, it’s apparent that an estimated average of around six such incidents occur per site each month, signifying a substantial issue for the industry.
“While the PRA understands the financial strain customers face due to the cost-of-living crisis, outright theft is not acceptable. Many of our members are single-site, family-run businesses serving local communities, and the burden of carrying these increasing costs places additional pressure on the margins required from fuel sales to sustain their businesses.”
Balmer concludes: “We urge the government and law enforcement authorities to address this issue as it not only impacts our members, but also affects the local communities they serve. The PRA remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure safer environments for our members and their communities.”
