Continental Timisoara plant celebrates double milestone

Hats off to the team at the Continental tyre plant in Timisoara, Romania, who have produced 300 million tyres. The Timisoara plant recently celebrated both its silver anniversary and this impressive production milestone.

Continental has invested more than 600 million euros in the Timisoara facility since setting up shop in Romania in 1998. The plant entered production at the end of 2000 after a one-and-a-half-year construction period. The facility employed Continental’s Modular Manufacturing Process (MMP) and in the early days was expanded to give it an annual production capacity of 8 million tyres. The plant now has the capacity to produce 16.5 million tyres a year and has enabled the tyre maker to create more than 2,700 permanent jobs in Timisoara, making it a major regional economic contributor.

Wide production programme

Christian Kötz, Head of Continental’s Tires group sector, congratulated the Timisoara team during an event at the plant. “This anniversary is a testament to 25 years of relentless commitment to innovation and excellence. My sincere ‘thank you’ goes to the entire team in Timisoara for their great dedication and support.”

The Timisoara plant produces a wide range of tyres for both replacement and original equipment, including ultra high-performance and van tyres in 13- to 20-inch sizes. The facility is currently gearing up to extend production into the 21-inch rim diameter size range. “With 300 million tyres produced in Timisoara we have equipped the equivalent of around 75 million cars worldwide with safe and premium quality tyres. This makes our entire team very proud, and I would like to congratulate everybody involved for this great achievement,” says plant manager Matthieu Turlure.

In 2023, as the city of Timisoara takes centre stage as the European Capital of Culture, Continental says its commitment to the local community remains unwavering. “Our journey, spanning 25 years, has transformed us from a greenfield plant to one of Continental’s largest tyre facilities. We are proud to write our success story in Timisoara and play a vital role in the city’s growth and success,” Turlure continues.
