Toyo Tires installs giant solar power plant at Malaysia tyre factory
Toyo Tires is installing a 14.0 MW solar power plant at its Toyo Tire Malaysia SDN BHD (TTM) tyre factory. According to Toyo representatives, TTM “mega-solar system” will be the largest in the state of Perak, Malaysia when work on the 96,000-square-metre rooftop space of the factory building is completed.
In response to the successful completion of the first half of the construction, a commemorative ceremony was held on 28 August with Perak Governor Saarani Bin Mohamad, administrative officials, local officials and business partners in attendance.
Governor Saarani commented: “We welcome Toyo Tire’s further focus on ESG initiatives to create a sustainable business environment in Malaysia. Toyo Tire and Solarvest will work together towards a greener future. I am proud to be able to meet you.”
The system is scheduled to be fully operational in December and is expected to generate approximately 19,000 MWh of electricity annually, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 12,000 tons per year.
TTM started operations in May 2013. The factory supplies “high-performance tyres with excellent uniformity” not only to Southeast Asia, but also to North America, Europe, and Japan. In addition to solar power generation, TTM will also work on energy saving in the manufacturing process to promote decarbonization in business activities.
Under Toyo TIRE Group’s Sustainability Management Policy, the company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and have set a target of reducing Scope 1+2 CO2 emissions by 46 per cent (compared to 2019) by 2030.
