Pirelli recalls 15,000 bicycle tyres in North America
Pirelli announced a voluntary recall in coordination with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on 7 September. 14,500 tyres covered by the recall have been sold in the USA, plus another 550 sold in Canada. Therefore, a total of 15,550 tyres are affected.
The North American recall pertains to “certain bicycle tyres in the P Zero Race TLR of the size 28-622 which were produced between the tenth week of 2023 and the 24th week of 2023.” (See below table for details)
The problem centres on a bead seating issue. Official filings offer more details, stating that the recall has been prompted by “problems of compatibility of the tyre with some wheel rims where under some conditions during bicycle tyre fitting or in service, including cases where tyre inflation pressure may exceed the maximum pressure allowed by the rim manufacturer, bead unseating and consequently rapid air loss in the tyres may occur resulting in potential loss of bicycle control and posing a fall hazard.”
In any case, consumers are advised to “should stop using the product immediately and contact Pirelli with any questions”, with company representatives adding: “Consumers are eligible to receive either a full refund or a replacement tyre.”
