Michelin’s new Pilot Sport S 5 aimed at race-track and road
Following the pattern set by the Pilot Sport 4 and, for even sportier vehicles, the Pilot Sport 4 S, Michelin is following-up the launch of the Pilot Sport 5 with the introduction of the Pilot Sport S 5. The new product is currently listed as available in 10 sizes, eight are associated with original equipment identifiers – AML (Aston Martin), ND0 (Porsche) and MO1 (Mercedes-Benz), according to the Michelin website. However, as our colleagues at Reifenpresse.de point out, two fitments come without such OE-specific references: 245/40 R21 96Y and 275/35 R21 99Y.
Michelin reports that the new tyre offers “razor-sharp handling for safe control” and is tailor-made for the most demanding sports cars including brands like: Corvette, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche. According to Michelin, its so-called Dynamic Response Technology contributes to that performance. The grip of the tyre on wet and dry roads, which is described as remarkable, is attributed, among other things, to the new tyre’s two-component tread compound and the tread’s large longitudinal grooves. As far as construction is concerned, the new tyre relies on an aramid nylon hybrid belt, something that is said to result in more immediate transmission of steering input.
