G&S Tyres joins Marangoni Ringtread Network
After more than 30 years as a Bandag franchisee, G&S Tyres has joined the Marangoni Ringtread Network. The company has also joined the NTDA as both a retreader and a tyre distributor – the latter in relation to its on-site car tyre fitting business. Tyres & Accessories recently visited the company’s Barking, London headquarters in order to find out more.
Founded by Gary Short more than three decades ago, G&S Tyre Services Ltd has been located on its current large Barking, London site just off the North Circular arterial road for more than 20 years. The company switched to Marangoni during the second week of April 2023 and has been transitioning through both its pre-existing stocks of treads and installing new Marangoni machinery since then. At the time of our vis it, the transition process was more than 80 per cent finished and is likely to be completed during the next month or so.
One specific upgrade has been the installation of a Ringbuilder 3000 double-headed, semi-automated Ringtread tyre builder. This particular machine is one of only two units of its kind operating in the UK and is said to offer significant productivity upgrades. Indeed, the fact that a ring can be applied to one casing while another casing is simultaneously prepared, is said to mean something like 150 per cent productivity performance compared with the conventional method.
Clearly, the wider support offered by Marangoni – including cooperation with the NTDA – appealed to G&S Tyres as well. As the first independent retreader to join the NTDA, G&S Tyres’s directors will no-doubt be pleased to hear NTDA chief executive Stefan Hay praise the sustainability of retreads and their place in the national tyre industry. As Stefan Hay told us during our visit to G&S Tyres: “We should be rebuilding infrastructure and supporting those that are doing a good job rather than allowing reliance on cheap and sub-standard imported products”.
As well as Marangoni’s treads and machinery, plus the support of relationships with the NTDA, training opportunities and the specific product benefits of the Ringtread range are said to have attracted G&S Tyres.
See the August edition of Tyres & Accessories for our complete report on developments with G&S Tyres and the expansion of the Marangoni Ringtread Network.
