Summer tyre prices up 23% since 2020 in Germany – Idealo
The average price of summer tyres in the German market has risen by 23 per cent in just two years. Idealo Internet GmbH told Tyrepress’s German sister site Reifenpresse, that the various crises and subsequent inflationary pressures have driven prices up.
The average asking price for all summer tyres on Idealo’s comparison platform of the same name has increased from 99 euro (2020) to 108 euro (2021) to 122 euro last year. This corresponds to an increase of almost a quarter within just two years. “The consequences of the corona pandemic, the Ukraine war and, last but not least, inflation do not stop at the material and production costs of tyres,” said Florian Kriegel from Idealo. Consumers must now pay almost as much for three tyres as they used to for a whole set, he adds.
The platform also revealed that German motorists seeking ways to keep costs under control could find the best potential for savings in March. Compared to December, the most expensive month, summer tyres cost around 12 per cent less, Idealo says. Drivers could therefore save almost 60 euros on a complete set, extrapolated against the 2022 average price.
Idealo said that despite this, its customers are unlikely to skimp on quality, since many trust well-known brands. The ten most popular tyre brands accounted for almost 80 per cent of the total demand on the platform in 2022. Continental led the way with 15 per cent of the total demand for summer tyres, closely followed by Michelin (13 per cent) and Hankook (10 per cent).
