Toyo: Serbia plant’s solar panels will save 200,000 tonnes of CO2
Toyo Tires has confirmed that its Indija, Serbia plant is using a “Taiyo (太陽)” solar energy array that is designed to eliminate 200,000 tonnes of CO2 over its working life.
According to the company, the array has been constructed to “make tyre production as environmentally friendly and carbon neutral as possible”. Currently 50 per cent of the solar panels have been commissioned with full utilisation coming online later this year.
During the construction of the solar array in Indjija, workers are being trained and prequalified for future jobs installing solar panels and managing the operation of solar power plants. These skills will be needed throughout the region in the future. As such, the project is supported by UNDP Serbia, through the “Just Green Transition and Decarbonization in Serbia”, financed by the government of Japan.
In July 2022, it emerged that MT-Komex Company had reportedly been contracted to construct “Serbia’s first bifacial solar power station” at Toyo’s Serbia tyre factory. Back then it was estimated that the solar power plant will cover 10 to 15 per cent of Toyo Tyres Serbia factory’s annual electricity needs. Toyo has since confirmed those facts in answer to Tyres & Accessories’s questions.
