Continental repels cyberattack
German tyre maker and automotive systems supplier Continental reports that it has “averted” a cyberattack on company IT systems. Continental says attackers “infiltrated parts” of its IT systems earlier this month but managed to avert the attack after detecting it. According to media reports, the attackers neither encrypted data nor demanded a ransom.
In a statement, Continental confirms that it “maintains full control over its IT systems” and that current information indicates that the IT systems of third parties “have not been affected.”
Continental says it “took all necessary defensive measures to restore the full integrity of its IT systems” immediately after discovering the attack. With the support of external cybersecurity experts, the company is conducting an investigation into the incident. This investigation is ongoing.
The relevant authorities, including security agencies, are aware of the incident and Continental is in close contact with them. The company is also consulting with data protection authorities and taking “necessary steps” to ensure it meets all data protection obligations.
“The security of its employees’, customers’ and partners’ information as well as of its own data is paramount to Continental,” states the firm. “That is why Continental has taken and continues to take extensive measures to constantly strengthen cybersecurity at the company.”
