Road safety: Michelin renews commitment to UNRSF
Michelin has marked the renewal of its support for the UNRSF (United Nations Road Safety Fund) with a donation of one million euros to facilitate road safety improvements in lower- and middle-income countries. It will donate this over the coming two years via the Michelin Corporate Foundation.
The tyre maker made this pledge and announcement in the context of the UN High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety in New York on 30 June and 1 July. The Global Plan, developed by WHO and the UN Regional Commissions, in cooperation with the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC), aims to reduce the number of road accidents causing death and serious injury by at least 50 per cent by 2030.
According to Michelin, road safety is not just the responsibility of government and NGOs: “Because safe mobility needs to be considered as a human right, Michelin encourages private partners to take part in the advocacy for a better way forward,” states the company. It will work towards this goal by developing a Global Strategy Partnership with UN entities such as UNRSF, international NGOs as well as other private sector partners.
Engagement can save lives
“At Michelin, we believe that our engagement for a safe mobility can save lives on the road,” says Florent Menegaux, chief executive officer of Michelin. “This is why we have supported the UNRSF since 2018 to develop road safety projects across many countries. This year it’s my great pleasure to announce that under our Michelin Corporate Foundation, Michelin is renewing its commitment with a total donation of one million euros for the next two years to support lower- and middle-income countries in need of road safety improvements.”
Alexis Garcin, president and chief executive officer of Michelin North America, Inc. who attended the UNRSF Pledging Event in New York adds: “I am extremely proud of Michelin’s engagement in the global challenge of making mobility safer, not only for a few, but really for everyone. It’s important because we all share the road. And we see the collaboration with the UN Global Plan as an opportunity to join forces and promote throughout the world a safer and more sustainable mobility.”
