SBTi validates new Pirelli greenhouse gas reduction targets
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Pirelli’s upgraded targets for reducing greenhouse gases. Four years ahead of schedule, the company reached the previous targets validated for Scopes 1 and 2 by the end of 2021.
SBTi has now approved a new Pirelli target that calls for actions consistent with the maintenance of climate warming “within 1.5°C”, compared with the previous scenario that called for remaining “well below 2°C”. The initiative – which sets and promotes best practices for reducing emissions based upon scientific factors – validated Pirelli’s target to reduce absolute GHG emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) 42 per cent by 2025 compared with 2015 levels, as well as its target of reducing emissions from purchased raw materials nine per cent by 2025, compared with 2018 (Scope 3).
“The validation of targets that are still more ambitious for the reduction of greenhouse gases by the Science Based Targets initiative is an authoritative acknowledgement of our commitment to the fight against climate change that sees us committed daily through our research and development into ever more efficient solutions along the whole value chain,” comments Marco Tronchetti Provera, chief executive officer and executive vice chairman of Pirelli.
