NMDA expects “record year” for new PTW sales after buoyant January

January 2022 experienced a 161.4 per cent increase (2353 units) for new PTWs in comparison to January 2021, a month that was once again plagued with partial lockdowns.

“The latest power Two Wheelers (PTW) registration figures showed a positive outlook for 2022; as long as supply continues to increase, PTW retailers can expect a record year for new registrations driven by high demand” said Paddy O’Connell, Head of National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA), commenting on the latest MCIA new registration figures.

The highest movement in January came from the Adventure category, with a 161.9 per cent rise to 1,286 units, supported by a 120.1 per cent increase (+562 units) in the 651-1000cc category. However, the Honda CRF 300 L took the honours for highest-registering Adventure bike with 198 units. This is positive news for PTW retailers, as this is an indication that leisure users are back in the market for what promises to be a phenomenal riding season.

Almost all types of motorcycle showed increases, with the custom category rising from 183 units to 351. Around 20 per cent of these registrations came from the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 (68 units).

Scooters and Mopeds gained an additional 2353 units (+61.4 per cent) year on year, with the Yamaha NMAX 125 achieving 14.4 per cent of the registrations in the category (163 units).

The ePTWs sector continues to grow. Year on year, January experienced a 72.2 per cent increase, to 496 total units. The ASkoll Espro 70 soars ahead with 115 units, 102 units more than the Scutum Seat Mo E-scooter 125. It will be interesting to see further growth in this sector as a means for clean mobility for both businesses and consumers alike.

When considering this power output is most comparable with 0-50cc internal combustion engines (ICE), achieving 735 units in total, it is promising to see that ePTWs contributed to 27.8 per cent of that market. This figure increases to 31.6 per cent of that market when looking at the full year in comparison to 2020.

The success of the Honda CRF 300 helped propel Honda back firmly to the top of the manufacturer table, with a total of 1375 units, 22 per cent of all PTWs registered in January.

It is therefore encouraging to see that consumer confidence remains buoyant in the sector, reinforced by the ever-growing registrations of ePTWs”.
