Buffer 8550E: Bandag introduces new fully automatic retreading machine
As part of Bridgestone, Bandag holds a world-leading position in retreading solutions. The automatic Buffer 8550E is the latest addition to the Bandag retreading portfolio following the launch of the Autoskive EB-ASW2. Bandag designed the Buffer 8550E to address one of the biggest challenges the retreading industry currently faces – adopting and optimising automation. Other retreading machines currently treat buffing as a multi-stage process in which tyres are prepared for the next stages of the retreading process. By deploying the fully automated Bandag Buffer 8550E, retreaders can reduce the manual effort required even further, a measure the manufacturer says will increase overall productivity. Bandag thus offers a whole range of advantages – including plate-shaped discs that facilitate the user-friendly pick-up and centring of casings, low power consumption and a self-contained housing that provides a safer working environment. In addition, the Buffer 8550E offers the option of working with multiple buffing radii – the ability to optimise milling operation results in reduced wear on buffing blades. Additional benefits include bead-to-bead buffing capabilities, remote diagnostics and BASys connectivity. BASys is Bandag’s digital casing and process management system that uses RFID scanning to automatically read casing specifications.
“Customers who select Bandag retreads choose economic sustainability along with full product performance,” comments Christoph Frost, director commercial products for Bridgestone Europe’s Central Region. “Our new Bridgestone tyres are manufactured in such a way that they can be perfectly renewed using the Bandag retreading process. They meet the same quality standards as new tyres (ECE 109) and retain the original casing with brand and age.”
Technical features & operability
The latest ‘plate-shaped disc’ technology enables casings to be precisely centred. Other features of the machine include a 360° multi-rasp that offers the options of milling with ‘convex’ and ‘standard’ tools as well as the application of rasp, carbide wheel and brush tools. The Bandag Buffer 8550E is capable of automatically buffing tyre sidewalls and cleaning them completely automatically. According to the manufacturer, it can even detect the casing belt to measure excess rubber.
Despite the many additional functions, the Bandag Buffer 8550E remains easy to operate thanks to a user-friendly HMI (Human Machine Interface). This also applies to the retrieval of buffing formulations with the BASys tool as well as the online support that offers help and advice when needed.
