Millimetre precision: Continental algorithm-based tread monitoring “a new benchmark”

A pilot project that Continental began with Share Now in late 2020 is progressing into a broader partnership that will see the car sharing firm’s Danish vehicle fleet fitted with Continental AllSeasonContact tyres and monitored under a Conti360° Solutions contract. The partnership includes new innovations, including algorithm-based, real-time tread depth monitoring.

During the pilot project, Continental has partnered with telematics specialist Questar (formerly Traffilog) to provide real-time tread depth monitoring to vehicles in the Share Now Demark fleet. Information from tyre sensors and vehicle telemetry data combines in the cloud with a specially developed algorithm, resulting in tyre tread predictions that offer a “high degree of accuracy.”

Noting that Continental is the first in the market to provide precise tread depth monitoring using an algorithm, Tansu Isik, head of business development and global marketing at Continental Tires, shares that the results are ”accurate to within one millimetre” – a level of exactness that “sets a new benchmark for smart, digital tyre solutions.” Share Now Denmark intends to adopt tread depth monitoring for the entire fleet once the pilot project is completed in March 2022.

The new arrangement covers the entire Share Now operation in Denmark, a fleet of around 700 cars, of which close to 65 per cent are electrically powered. Formed by the merger of car2go and DriveNow, Share Now is headquartered in Germany and jointly owned by Daimler AG and BMW. It currently offers car sharing in 16 cities across eight European countries.
