Kumho to exclusively supply TCR Europe championship
Following the WSC Group’s announcement that Kumho Tire has developed a bespoke tyre for TCR competition, TCR Europe has confirmed its intention to switch its exclusive tyre supply from Hankook to Kumho for the 2022 season. WSC approved the Kumho tyre following a successful evaluation test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on the day after the final event of the 2021 TCR Europe season.
TCR Europe is the latest TCR series to announce the switch to Kumho, with TCR Spain, TCR Eastern Europe and TCR Denmark already having confirmed Kumho tyre supply for their championships’ upcoming season.
Single tyre for multiple series makes total sense
“We are delighted to be making this announcement and I am looking forward to working with Kumho Tire from next season,” comments Paulo Ferreira, TCR Europe promoter. “Having a single tyre across a range of TCR series makes total sense for both organisers and competitors and I think it shows great foresight by Kumho Tire to work with WSC and series promoters by producing a bespoke TCR tyre. I would also like to thank Hankook Tire for their work with us during the 2021 season.”
Marcello Lotti, president of WSC, adds: “Kumho Tire has made a great effort to embrace TCR, and that dedication is shown first and foremost in the quality of the product, which we have now evaluated and approved. We have always encouraged the many promoters in the TCR series to choose the same tyre, which helps with technical cooperation and makes it easier for teams to compete in several series because the different characteristics of the tyres do not come into play.”
The 2022 TCR Europe season will begin at Portimão in Portugal over the weekend of 30 April 30 to 1 May. The calendar features seven events at some of Europe’s most iconic racing circuits before concluding in Barcelona in October.
