TRA urges UK to mirror Australia’s move to end unprocessed end-of-life tyre exports
The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has spoken out to endorse the Australian government’s move to prohibit the export of most unprocessed end-of-life tyres from December 2021. The only exception will be casings suitable for retreading or validated reuse. In addition, Peter Taylor, secretary general of the TRA urged DEFRA Secretary of state George Eustice MP to closely study this change in Australian law and consider whether the UK should follow a similar path:
“We in the TRA view this move by Canberra to be progressive and sensible as it will not only drive forward greater domestic tyre reprocessing in Australia but also ensure that exported tyre-derived material heads for more environmentally acceptable uses abroad. It is our view that the UK and other countries should follow this very sensible initiative which we are pleased to note was actively promoted by a cross-section of the entire Australian tyre industry!”
