Perivallon: Kraiburg Austria brings first water-based solution to market
Retreading companies face significant challenges these days due to growing demand upon them to ensure greater operational reliability, workplace health and safety, and environmental protection. This certainly applies to the conventional spraying and coating solutions used in both mould cure and pre-cure retreading. These products contain petrol and are classed as hazardous goods that are subject to strict specifications and restrictions, including in the transportation of these hazardous goods, their storage and the processing and disposal of the empty containers as special waste. A “suitable alternative” now exists: With Perivallon, Kraiburg Austria introduces a water-based solution for the first time. This offers both ecological and economic advantages over existing solutions that contain petrol.
Solvent vapours are emitted when spraying on petrol solution – resulting in high and direct exposure for employees. Extraction equipment, protective clothing and regular measurements are legally prescribed in order to minimise risk to the workforce and the environment. The new Perivallon contains no hydrocarbon solvents and is, therefore, less harmful to the environment and those who work with it. Its use removes the necessity for expensive and often difficult to organise transportation and storage of hazardous goods, and the disposal of empty containers is unproblematic. Furthermore, as only a tenth as much Perivallon needs to be applied compared with conventional petrol-based solutions, storage space is reduced by 90 per cent. Precise dosing of Perivallon, therefore, makes a major contribution to minimising waste.
A further advantage is lower maintenance and cleaning costs for spray booths, spray guns and filters. An absence of hazardous and environmentally harmful vapour emissions mean that extraction equipment isn’t essential, but Kraiburg still recommends using these. “The name Perivallon comes from the Greek and simply means environment,” explains Holger Düx, sales manager at Kraiburg Austria. “We are happy that with this product we can make an active contribution to the greatest good of any company, the health of their employees. At the same time, we avoid harmful emissions while still achieving comparably good application results.”
Extremely simple application
Kraiburg Austria reports that application is extremely simple: Perivallon comes in 20-litre canisters, and owing to its high concentration, ten times the number of tyres can be processed compared with conventional petrol-based solutions. Stirring or shaking is only necessary if the solution has been kept standing for extended periods. An accompanying spray system fitted with the appropriate spray head ensures optimal dosage. Perivallon appears as a whitish, milky film when first applied to the casing but turns transparent within the five to eight-minute drying process. The temperature of both the material and the workroom should be at least 15°C during processing. Perivallon is available from March to the end of October. Protected from frost, it can be stored for nine months.
